Scope limits in BR shooting

I think you misunderstood my post. Did you see the ????? marks ? Meaning is everyone supposed to bring reciepts for everything showing MSRP (kinda pointless). I mean That guys using $29 ammo and I'm only using $3 ammo it's an endless diatribe. So I suggest The club supplies the ammo, (cheap to High end) and change it every shoot, limit sighters and run what ya brung. It about as RULE FREE as you can get , Maybe separate the semi-autos but other than that let'em play.

From personal experience, when you modify rules to allow the "wants" of others, you will begin to discourage the core group of shooters that got your match rolling. Then attendance starts to fade, the core group starts to feel "What's happened?". I found the ones I changed the rules for ended up not being dedicated attendants of the match. With the core group in and out and the other group unreliable the program faded away. Try to keep in mind the group that was there at the start and accepted the rules.

The point, not only one, about a max 6X scope is to challenge the shooters. But, in the process many will get discouraged and quit. So, raise the X limit.

Our local club is new to 50 yard bench rest shooting on the IBS green target. We have arbitrarily set a 6x scope limit. Some shooters want more power. We may try the IBS red target soon that really needs a higher power scope.
Question: how do handle this? I am not sure why we set a 6x limit in the first place. I see that folks are using scopes with anywhere from 4 to 50.
We don’t want our group to get involved in a $ race if we can.
Suggestions?

If you don’t want to get into a $$ race then keep the 6x scope limit. By you keeping the 6x limit you’ll find out that all your doing is limiting the amount of shooters you‘ll have at your match. I personally don’t own a scope that will go down that low on any of my 22’s.

No, to up scale the challenge. Originally IBS and NBRSA hunter rifle class (6X scope max plus weight and stock profile rules) was to come as close to a hunting rifle as could be. In past days custom actions were not allowed. If you want to compete in the score game in either organization and have no scope X limit you can shoot light or heavy varmint for score class.

You do not need really good glass to shoot small. Image quality doesnt matter that much. You may like using it better, but its not helping you as much as you think.

I am trying to develop a 22rf contest for our club. I just refuse to pay 50 cents a shot for 22rf, so my initial thought was to limit the ammo. Then I considered $10 entry and 50% goes back 50-30-20. Knowing that the same guys would win every time. I have pretty well settled on KYL (5 targets 2in to1/4 in) and charge $5 for target repair and make a little for the club. No prizes, you are shooting for bragging rights and we post the scores and your equipment, including brand of ammo. There is no way to keep any competition from becoming an equipment race. Now I have to decide on how many shots in the course of fire. I'm thinking 10 shots in 5 minutes (go through the rack twice) no sighters (sighter will be the 2 inch first target.) And we change the range every week ie. 50yd min to 100 yd max.

What do ya think?

IMO you are over complicting what is suppossed to be a fun match - Just decide on a target. set it a whatever distance you like. You will likely get some initial interest from new shooters but then it will trickle down to a few dedicated ones who will be there most of the time.
At that point you will have some input from the remaining dedicated shooters about the scope magnification, type of targets, varying distances, and so on.

Realistically most folks don't really like to compete because they have to face the fact that they are not as good as they have thought they were, or that Old Betsy just isn't up to match standards - even if it is only a fun match.

People are not very likely to travel very far or take the time to even go to a match where you only get to fire 10 shots and then go home. Fifty shots is more realistic. Keeping the match for honors only also is a good idea in my opinion. Mabey having a trophy for the shooter with the highest total for 5 matches at the end of the season would also encourage attendance.

Scope power within reason is not going to have much influence on on scores at 50 yards. I shoot on the IBS green targets with a Walther KKM and RWS R-50 with a Weaver T-36 scope. I have fired many clean targets with high X counts in mild conditions. Restrict me to a 6,9,12,16,20,24X scope of decent quality and I could still do it in the same conditions. Take away my R-50 and have me shoot the same ammunition as everyone else and it would get real interesting. $5-$8 ammunition is generally available on line and buying in large quantity and adding a few dollars to the entery fee to cover the other costs associated with the match would level the playing field a lot. Changing the brand and /or lot# with each match would also spice things up. Even going with bulk ammunition occasionally would be interesting. Issue only 50 rounds for two 25 shot targets with no sighters would also make it a real challenge.

just my 2 pennies from watching IHMSA sillouete rules it self out of existance. DON'T DON'T DON'T make rules for every possiable situation your organization will begin a long slide down.

Why the slam against IHMSA? It's the only handgun silhouette organization in the U.S., NRA gave up several years ago. IHMSA is planning the 48th annual championship and have 250 registered guns already, hardly out of existence.

A local club uses the target, 25 bull, with 1/4" 10 ring, don't recall the org. They basically use NRA rifle silhouette specs for sporter and target class (=any scope, non tapered barrel), and the sporter class has 6x limit. They have an unlimited category for guns over 11 lbs but nobody shoots it. I like the format.

Other orgs have half inch 10 rings with x count, or a 100 point center ring with worst edge scoring. All targets at 50y.
