Scope for my 204 Varmint Rifle

You can't have too much scope when the conditions allow high magnification and you are trying to spot a head peeking out at 500 yards, though I've also seen so much mirage at times (even in the snow) that max used was 18x. I think you will be more than pleased with the Sightron, though you might consider the 50x version because you get a wider field of view. You can set it up for the same power you would want to use on the 30X (assuming 30X or less, of course) and you can dial it back for scanning or when conditions won't permit - but you can also dial it up if you want to scan is absolute detail at shorter ranges. Also, the 50x version is 1/8" m.o.a., whereas the 30X version is 1/4" moa. The downside to the 50X version is extra size and weight - so I'd go with the 30X if you will carry the rifle a lot. I don't. I set up on a rotating stand where I will sit for hours with the rifle on a heavy rest. I really like their dot reticle if you use the turrets as I do. The performance of the Sightron III is either on par or nearly so with my other Nightforce, March and Swarovski scopes costing up to 5 times as much for practical field use, though it seems they put out a better scope with the 50x model. Have used five of them for well over five years now and have had no issues, despite constant turret adjustments and a few spills. My hunting buddies use them exclusively. My only complaint about them is that the side focus adjustment knobs on them are harder to turn than they need to be. I'd not be scared of putting too high of a power on if it is adjustable. And if you have a brake on your rifle - no need for a spotter.
