Scope for hunting out west.?

3 MOA will kill every deer or elk if you keep within the limitations of your rifle or your abilities.
Right and my point is u dont need to ‘dial’ at max 500 with a hi power 7mm to hit the boiler room. That is unless you dont ‘get’ point blank n use a basic dope sheet.

I had the vx-5 and vx-6 and so did a buddy. We found they dialed ok for about 10 moa but by the time you got to 20 it added a minute. If only shooting to 500 that would be ok. I like my 4-32 nx8 because I tuned all my hunting rifles at 600 or 1000 and liked the high power for that.
I need a little clarification since I can only verify my dope on target here to 500 yards. Are you saying that the scopes added 1 MOA to what the calculated dope was? Or would it be 1 MOA off from your on target verification? For my use as a hunter, as long as it dialed the same each time to my on target verification I would be satisfied. If it was different than my target verified dope, that is unacceptable. Thanks.

That isn’t something I’ve given much thought towards, but certainly will keep that in my memory banks ( my until my dementia takes over) . I’m currently using a 24x scope to tune my hunting/ varmint rig out to 1 k and the math has been really close so far.

If you are shooting 3 moa, just don't shoot over 200 yards. Which is further than most successful game is shot at. My 338wm has a 2-10x on it, my 7saum has a 4-14x, my 30TC currently has a 4-20x on it because I was working on a new load(it shot so well I left it on). The first few elk with the 30tc was with a 3.5-10x with a ballistic plex, set it at 10x shoot out to 500. KNOW your limitations and don't ever take a hope shot.

I can tell you i will not pull a gun out of my safe to go hunting unless its atleast a .5moa gun, maybe that's just me but I wont and that's proven at way more than 100 yards.
I just sighted in my 6 Creed this morning for Antelope hunting, had a slight breeze off and on at 665 yards that's a 3" black circle with a 1.5 white dot in the middle.
I put my old 5x20 Huskemaw on it it has a pretty fine reticle and at 20x there's not much of the 3" that isn't covered all of the 1.5 is no way you can hold center with a 10x scope

yeah, almost impossible to aim at a small point without some power. I shot this seating test Monday at 1000yards with a 24x vortex scope on my Tikka dasher aiming at a 2” orange dot, the crosshair covered most of it. lol I confirmed the load at 500 meters ( 546 yards) an hour later. I’m going to roll with it this hunting season.

I put the 6 Creed together last year and tuned it up after talking with Tom with a straight 36x scope at 665 and just put it away. Drug it out this weekend from my safe and put the Huakema on it put it on paper at 100 couple days ago loaded up same load from last year and dialed it in at 665 with the Huskema

200 yards, who needs a scope...cheers.

Actually, by site rules, shoot irons or tip-off scope mounts if you go out for whatever reason. Nanooks being the Apex predators in that part of the world, I chose irons.

30-06 with irons and 180 silver tip is plenty. That was when my Uncle sent me for a year vacation 220+ miles above the Arctic Circle, 73-74.

I should shut up BUT.

As i said, how you hunt, dictates your equipment.

Sherm won't hunt with a rifle that won't shoot .5 or under, he depends on his equipment and his ability to shoot to harvest game. He is correct for how he hunts.

I depend on my ability to get close enough to kill it with what ever I have in my hands, bow, flintlock or rifle.

I like accurate rifles and have even won some rifle shoots and participate in BR matches, MS and small bore over the years. I have very accurate rifles. Shooting game at a distance isn't anymore of a rush than punching holes in paper. Getting close enough to see their facial reaction when they realize I'm there is a rush. I would rather spend all day in on a track figuring out how a buck tries to escape and finally be there when he thinks he's lost me. Sneak through the woods and spot an ear moving or the straight line of a back where it shouldn't be. That's a rush

Sneak through the woods
Out here on the Praire were I live now and theres alot of high Country that I like to hunt there is no sneaking through the woods.
Using the terrain to your advantage can help but try seeking up on on a speed goat they have incredible eyes.
I'm not one to sit on a water hole waitng.
I grew up hunting the " woods" of Western Wa. Blacktails last few years I lived there i started hunting the high Country Cascades that's when I was bitten by the M.D. bug its a whole different ball game there than the flat praire country or vast open country especially when these bucks start rutting and covering country looking for does you dont have time to circle way around or they will be gone.
