Scope for hunting out west.?

If you have to wait 3 years or more to get drawn for an elk tag, I would rather have all the power on a scope I can handle. Then, when you get a shot at 500- 800 yards, you are okay. One of my brothers lives in Oregon and things are much different there. So, It depends on where you hunt. Rather have more power than not enough.

Any scope that doesn't hold zero, or has a wandering zero when dialing, is completely useless to me.....especially when I'm taking a shot at game.

Your friend might want to go review RokSlide's scope testing pages. If one slip/trip/fall 'out west' shifts the point of impact, the scope is a worthless liability IMHO.
Those guys are insanely brutal on the testing. I appreciate their dedication to the cause.

Good hunting scope will have at least 30' FOV at minimum mag. 12x works for the top magnification, but I always want more.

I very much agree.

I also wonder how their tests compare to slipping on loose footing and going down hard on a rifle. I kinda think their testing show us which scopes are more likely to survive a 'worst case scenario' when out hunting. Kinda like the saying I had back in my motorcycling days......dress for the slide, not the ride....

Winchester 70 in .270 is a very good rifle for big game. But I have never owned one. My long distance hunting rifle is a Savage 99 in .308 that has been Magna-Ported to eliminate muzzle jump. This rifle has been very accurate and deadly with plain but effective 150 or 180 grain Core-lokt ammo. For hunts within forests, I typically hunt with my Mossberg 30-30 carbine featuring a 16 inch barrel. I am not concerned about velocity or energy numbers on paper. I know from experience that a good bullet shot into the chest organs does the job every time. Jack
