Scent Free Carbon Removal ??

R.Morehouse

I am looking for a high quality carbon remover that is as sent free as possible. I have been using Butches and it has worked well. I don't mind the sent at all but the " little woman " is a real PITA when it comes to me cleaning guns in the house. My copper remover is Bore Tech Cu+2 that is virtually sent free and works great for me. Any suggestions are appreciated......Thank's......Rick

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

Iosso on a stiff nylon brush or tight patch has no odor and it works great.
The Iosso Bore Cleaner, not their GunBrite Polish.

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

My sniffer isn't the best but I don't think the Wipe out patch out is too bad compared to other products I've used. I couldn't be happier with a cleaning product. Much better than ammonia or others I've used imo.

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

For "general" carbon / copper removal after a match, I use "Bore-Tech Eliminator".. Works excellently on BOTH carbon as well as copper. About every 400-500 rounds, I use JB Bore Paste on a stiff nylon brush with a patch wrapped around it. About 50 passes, a clean up of the mess and you will have a squeaky clean barrel. Carbon is the REAL culprit in accuracy destruction, not necessarily copper. Unless of course you have a severe copper build up problem. About the only time you are going to get a big copper build up in today's excellent barrels, is when you have a pretty good case of firecracking. BUT the JB Bore Paste regimen will keep that to a minimum too..

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

"Remington 40X" bore cleaner with a nylon brush. Easy on the bore and removes carbon like no other. No foul or harmful odors whatsoever and can be found at just about any Walmart or local and big name sporting goods stores. Good on copper removal too, but recommend Pro Shot Copper Solvent for that task after using 40X. Pro Shot doesnt have any harmful odors either. If you have a bore scope, pick up a bottle of 40X, clean a barrel, then look at it with the scope. It even picks copper and carbon out of fire cracks! Great stuff.

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

I use BoreTec C4 for Carbon and BoreTec Cu+2 for Copper. Although this requires 2 separate cleaning steps as compared to the single step BoreTec Eliminator, BoreTec on their web site rates the BoreTec C4 as a better carbon remover than the Eliminator. The C4 like the Cu+2 you use is virtually odor free.

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

Simple Green, a couple of wet patches and let sit for a few minutes and then a bronze brush. It dissolves carbon better than any chemical I ever used. About $4 per pint. Great for cleaning muzzle brakes and carbon on the crown. Good smell, non toxic and cheap. Patch bore dry and follow up with a light oil like Kroils.

Re: Sent Free Carbon Removal ??

Thanks you all for the input. Lot's of great suggestions, no doubt my problem is solved..... 8)

I recommended Iosso specifically to prevent carbon ring from forming in the throat. If you just want to remove fresh carbon from the bore most of the items mentioned will work. However, once the carbon gets hard there is no solvent that will dissolve it...it must be removed mechanically.

Mechanically? Not sure what that means...

Remington 40X solvent will get any type of carbon out of the barrel

^^^^^As opposed to chemically........Mechanically as in using a rod with a brush or patch with a mild abrasive to scrub out the hard carbon, or, as a few shooters do- use a precisely sized aluminum arrow shaft with teeth cut into the end.
Again, if we are talking about a carbon ring that has formed in the small gap where the case neck ends and the chamber neck ends and has been allowed to accumulate. As far as I know there is no known chemical ( not even GM top engine cleaner) that will dissolve this ring once it gets started. On newly deposited carbon, spit will even remove it if you clean it quickly after firing as is done with muzzleloaders.

Armored Transport,
Use the Bore Tech C4 and their Chameleon Gel together at the same time to speed up the process a little. The Chameleon gel is slightly abrasive to remove dissolved carbon and expose the fouling underneath to the solvent. The nice thing about Bore-Tech products is that they are all compatible and can be used in a bore at the same time if necessary.

Oh I see. I agree. No solvent on a patch alone will get hard carbon out. The Rem 40X I talk about seems to have a very fine corn cob media in it. It's an abrasive, but it's harmless on the metal. Instructions on the bottle say to use a soaked patch, but when coupled with a nylon brush it works much better. Just have to make sure you use a different type of solvent with a patch to remove the 40X from your barrel and chamber when done. That's why I finish up with Pro Shot Copper solvent. Gets the 40X out and annihilates any small copper deposits left behind.

However, I'm not sure if 40X would be ideal for some factory barrels with heavy tooling marks because usually those barrels shoot better when fairly dirty. The 40X may get them TOO clean.

As far as "scent free"? Stay away from Simple Green. Cleans like a charm but the smell may get to you. Pretty stiff!!
