Savage

Is the Savage 110 and the axis the same action ? If so , does anyone know what corners are being cut to make the axis so much cheaper ? Thanks , Kenneth

They are not the same. I know the recoil lug on the Axis does not fit around the barrel, like a washer on a bolt would. It is more like a key that fits in a key way that is machined into the front of the action on the Axis. Hopefully this helps. The Axis is on the top.

I wonder if it would shoot better if the recoil lug was epoxyed in rather than a slip fit ? I did have one in 243 to shoot for a day and it shot ok , at 100 yds it was 1 1/2" group with rem 100gr psp's. The trigger was really hard to pull, seemed to be in the 8 pound range, Got the spring cut an adjusted and that got it down some.

No they are not the same. I like my .223 Axis, it shoots well with 68 gr. Hornaday bthp bullets. Terrible trigger pull, but that can be fixed. I miss the availability of the Savage/Stevens rifle.

My Axis trigger was easily over 6 pounds. Adjusting didn't seem to help, so I removed the spring entirely - AND it was still over 6 pounds. But after some polishing on the trigger and sear along with a little tweaking with a jewelers file, I have it down around one pound WITH the spring.

I had a axis apart last night. I was looking at the face of the receiver and i has no threads and a relief all the way around the thickness of the keyed in lug. I wonder if i could put it on a truing jig and face off that relief on the front of the receiver and then just put on a standard lug and bed the stock? Just a thought not trying to hijack. Matt

The Axis is what it is. I would recommend you get a 110 action if your wanting to do a build. I am a Savage fan and have several 110`s and switch barrels on them more than I should, but I play with several wildcats. I have an Axis in 22-250 that is a tack driver, well under 1/2 moa. I may put a weaker spring and an adjustment screw in the trigger but that`s about all i would do to it because without the recoil lug I don`t think I could get any better accuracy from it.

I am not trying to bash the Axis owners out there with this, but doesn't it seem ironic that an action that was once made about as cheaply as could be made (which coincidentally happened to also hold some accuracy advantages) is now being replaced/augmented by an even easier to make albeit not as well made or accurate action by the same company. When you look back over the last ten years, Savage's higher quality rifles have just about doubled in price and have created the need for a rifle at the price point that the 10/110 used to sell at. Additionally the accutrigger would be hard to make much cheaper than it already is. It does a pretty decent job for the level of manufacturing behind it, but they can't put that one in the Axis, or they would eat into their own profit with the 10/110.

They do have the axis with the accu trig. The accu trig can be fitted to an axis , even the target version . The recoil lug can be fitted if you want , the action needs to be cut back , but this can be done easily while truing .

There are several Savage actions and some versions of most of them.

The 10/110 is older among current actions. When the Accu-Trigger came out, the older design was (is?) still being made under the Stevens 200 designation.

The Axis (originally named Edge) is a completely different design, designed to compete in the minimal-dollar hunting rifle market.

Since then it has been offered in a heavy barrel version, and also upgraded to the Axis II version, which has a version of the Accu-Trigger. I got a sporter barreled Axis II package gun chambered in .30-06.

Mine was problematic until I read somewhere that there were assembly issues in the Package gun scope mountings. Sure enough, the mount was buggered. I got a new 20MOA replacement base, and that issue is resolved. I replaced the package scope with a Tasco 2.5-10 x42 MilDot scope. Sighting it in is on the agenda.

The Axis is not intended to serve as a donor action for a precision build. You would be better served by a Stevens 200, if you don't mind finding a replacement trigger.

I bought my Axis II as a matter of curiosity, perhaps to serve as a loaner deer rifle for my soon-to-be adult grand kids. They both have their first hunting licenses this year and plan to quest for the local whitetails.

Also available to them is a Mossberg 20ga bolt action rifled barrel slug gun, and a Win '94AE 44Mag trapper carbine, both carrying dot scopes.

I have a Savage 110 in 6.5x284 which was originally a predator hunter model. It has the same recoil lug you show on the axis as well as the same round lock nut on the barrel. I like the Savage other than the stupid bolt release on the newer ones like mine that is in front of the trigger guard. That mechanism also makes the trigger unique. Mine is no longer stock, has a Choate varmint stock and a modified accutrigger. Shoots well however.

I could be wrong but I believe that the picture is of a couple of 110 actions. The top appears to be a round back for an Accustock and the other has a old standard recoil lug. Again could be wrong.

I too have an Axis, was a 223 but now its a 223 Imp and a 20 Practical, both shoot better than the original barrel. Plus I stiffened the forend of the stock and stuffed the butt with sand, which with the heavier barrels, the gun balances just about midway of the mag. I replaced the too heavy for target shooting trigger with a Timney. Also tricked out my Harris bipod for a more stable stance. My Axis has the key way machined in the action and the recoil lug embedded in the stock. Also, the bolt is questionable as far as being different. I hadn't thought of truing the action and elminating recoil lug keyway but if I can find a single shot follower I might have to re-evaluate upgrading this toy....

Re: Savage Axis

After looking closely at a couple Axis models all I can say is "you get what you pay for". I like Savage rifles and have a couple of them but I do have minimum standards and these rifles are below that level, at least for me. There are just too many better models to choose from.

Was looking for a cheap, reasonably accurate rifle for coyote this Winter. One that is fairly light for a day of bushwhacking and it could stand up to being dragged through snow and mud. Saw a plain black Axis XP combo in .243 in a local gun shop for under $400. Didn`t know anything about the Axis but it looked to have the same action as my long range F Class target rifles so took a chance and bought it. Replaced the 3-9 Weaver with a 4-12 Bushnell, a little better for long range work.

Worked up some starter loads and went to the range where I quickly learned the trigger pull was somewhere between ghastly and god-awful, maybe around 10 lbs with a lot of creep. Sighted the rifle in, went home and looked around on the InterNet for solutions to the trigger pull. Didn`t want to mess around with the triggers on my target rifles so looked for a solution using the stock trigger. Found a nice fix using an 8-32 allen bolt cut to 3/4 inch and the large half of the original sear spring. The small half was factory installed down into the 8-32 hole in the rear of the sear bar. The allen bolt is screwed into this hole, the large spring half set in its original position and the allen bolt is used to set the sear engagement. Came out at a nice 3 lbs with no creep.

Over the past few weeks have been working on loads and zeros. Last week shot a beautiful 3/8 inch group at 200 metres (220 yds) using the 80 gr Sierra SPBT and 44.5 gr H4350 in Win brass, Win primers. Chronos at 3335 fps.

Was so impressed bought an Axis XP in .25-06. Replaced the Weaver with a Bushnell 6-18 and did the trigger mod. Yesterday got a 1/2 inch group at 100 metres (110 yds) with the Sierra 70 gr BlitzKing and 50 gr RL15, Win brass and primers. Chronos at 3680. Haven`t gone to 200 metres yet.

So have to say I am a happy camper. Couple of accurate working rifles for not much money. Digitals of the two groups below.
