Savage warranty?

Has anyone ever had to use savage warranty? I called them today about an issue on a new model 10 that I just bought. The bolt lug raceway is extremely rough and the bolt head even has gouges from it. The lady from savage warranty said I could send it in and they would look at it but she made it sound that if it still functioned fine it wasn't a warranty issue. I even went to a big box store today that had the same exact model and that one had a much better finish. Has anyone else experienced this or had to use savage warranty?20191223_132644.jpg 20191223_132506.jpg

it took me months to get satisfaction, but I did. take pictures post them on the net. and ask for a replacement rifle. do not me meek nor quiet. do not be rude, just firm

WOW 6.5 grendel, The lady from savage warranty said I could send it in and they would look at it but she made it sound that if it still functioned fine it wasn't a warranty issue.

That's almost as bad as Remington told me not long ago when I called to inform them of a chamber not being correct. C S told me if I shot factory ammo my problem would go away. Go figure. Needless to say I didn't send it back. Had it re-barreled by odcustomrifles @ WSMNUT here on the site.

That's ruffer than a cob... Looking at the bolt head and lugs I believe I would send it back if I had a good chance of them replacing it. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I’ve got 3 Savage target actions and the lug ways are rougher than I woulda thought they should be but not as rough as what the OP shows.

I keep my action lug ways and bolt slicked with FP-10, grease on the lugs.

I see no galling or accelerated wear.

I’d send the OP’s rifle back.

the QC guy musta been loaded when that rifle came through.

I had one experience with Savage warranty and it’s weird; so their target actions have a small square silicone pad to cushion where the bolt stem contacts the action. I had one come off and the groups opened up, I think, I think the bolt was “bangin” on the action when fired. Its a gun that shoots real small so the little rubber pad?
That’s what I told the Savage lady on the phone, she mailed out 3 that day. Superglued a new one on and back to itty bitty groups.

Let's be honest. The gal on the phone was probably in the middle of a bad day. Savage will make it right. But it will still be a pain in the butt.

You sent it to the right person. WSMNUT built a BAT benchrest rifle for a friend of mine. It is a work of art.

U r 100% correct Bro. He has just completed that rifle and also a new Rem 700 BR 6mmBR 1-8 26" for me and will ship them both Thursday the 26th. I have seen pics and love both of them.

I have never seen one that rough but most are not perfect except the target actions are pretty smooth. I think they will replace the receiver in the end. It looks like the tooling was dull as a butter knife and it slipped through their non rigorous inspection,LOL

Their CS is quite good. If you don't have a box to ship it back in, they'll send you one, both really, one to pack the gun in and one to put that box in to ship. USPS it back to the factory and be SURE to place a note inside as to the problem, your address, phone, etc.

You can figure about 6 weeks for turn around, at least that's been my experience.

Good luck, and keep us updated.

I had an issue with a Savage a while back ,nice lady on the phone emailed me a free return shipping label and copy of their FFL while we spoke . They fixed me up just fine, the whole process took 9 days from when I shipped it out until it's return .

I have dealt with them on exchange of a bmag. The service department guys were great. They did not have the rifle I wanted to exchange for so it took over a month to get things finished. Also had problems with a mag spring. They sent me a new mag immediately. Both times the guy I dealt with was named “Browning”. He was up the food chain some.
I would send it back after getting a return authorization number.

It looks like you're running it dry. Have you lubed it? How does it feel? does it cycle smoothly?

Does the bolthead reeally have gouges or is the black coating just wearing off?

If it cycles smoothly, you're looking at a purely cosmetic issue.

How much did you pay for it?

These actions are mass produced and a cosmetic, internal issue would probably not be something I would complain about. That's just me.

I had a new savage ftr stile rifle that shot little bitty groups but unfortunately at 100 yds the little groups were on the next target to the right. this was about 8 ft off. I tried 3 night force scopes, 3 high dollar rails, & the sets of high dollar rings. All these parts had been proven on other rifles and had given no problems. I finally measured the muzzle and found the barrel had been drilled badly off center. I wish I had looked there first. I called Savage and they said I should sent it to them and if it was bad they would take care of it. About 3 weeks after I had sent it off my rifle was returned with a new barrel and would still shoot little bitty groups. Thankfully this time they were on my target. I relate this story to illustrate that not every warranty response is equal. Not every customer service rep is equal. Send them the gun and check the results. If you are not happy ask for a supervisor and show your displeasure but be nice. Savage is going thru a lot of changes with the new ownership and it may take a bit to get them back on track. My bet is they will make it right.

This is what the bolt looked like when I took it out of the plastic sleeve before I ever put it in the action and yes it is gouged along the sides, not just worn. It is definitely not from being ran dry. This has never been fired by me, just picked it up this past weekend. The bolt cycles but not smoothly at all. That's why I'm worried they will say that it still functions and won't do anything about it. That's how they made it sound on the phone and in an email I recieved from them this morning after I sent them pictures. They say that I gave to ship it to them on my dime and they will look at it to see if it functions.

OK if the bolt cycle is rough, I'd complain. My advise, which may be worth about what you're paying for it, is to focus your complaint aroung the functional issue of a rough cycle. They'll be more responsive to a rifle that won't function correctly than something they will call a minor cosmetic issue.

When speaking to customer service, I've had much better lock being patient and sweet like I was trying to talk my grandmother out of $20. If I have to get mean, it is usually ugly and they will dig in. It is easier for them to say no to someone they find offensive that someone that is treating them extremely nicely.
