Savage PTA

That's not the point, Erik. How would you feel if you just bought a Ford Escape and then a friend told you it was a POS? Because you should have bought a Cadillac Escalade. But you didn't because you couldn't afford the Cadillac.

And I do have a sense of humor. :D

BTW, nice design on the barrel tuners. What thread pitch are you using?

I've got a buddy buying the same action to build an F-CLASS gun in 6BR Norma...what about stocks...he's getting a McGowen large shank 30" barrel and already has glass...stock seems to be a stumblin point...any suggestions? I told him to call Savage adn see about buying one of the factory F-CLASS stocks to get up and shooting sooner rather than later waiting for a custom and the inletting...

Hey Erik, it looks like you may have to "Salvage" your reputation on here!!!

This has nothing to do with reputations. It's my opinion and I express it just like everyone else does. I speak the truth due to past experiences.
A Savage trigger is NOT better than a Jewell, nor a Kelbly, nor a Bix N Andy. Some guys are ok with their Savage trigger, but they must admit it's not the best instead of defending it like if they didn't know any better.

Do Savage actions shoot well? Yes they do.
Have I been beaten by them? Yes I have.
Have I ever owned one? Yes I have.
Was it the best action I have ever handled? No it was not.
Are Savage actions the smoothest factory actions? No they are not.

Anyway...

Bill, my friends do tell what I drive are POS, because they are my friends and they don't lie to me! LOL

But I agree with them, because the Escalade is better than the Escape! ;)

You need to take a cool shower son>>> MY reply was very much meant to be light-hearted!! Certainly not a slam whatsoever... C'mon!!!

I know Ben. But once I started typing I could not stop, has that ever happened to you? It happened to me! ;)

Anyway, better get some shut eye, back to work tomorrow.

Besides all the Escalade/Escape discussion.

One thing I did like about the Savage trigger was the fact that it acts almost like a two stage trigger. It can be set light and works fine. You can engage the first stage watch the mirage and flags then let the trigger break.

Many of us have started out with Savages and have won many matches with them. I started off with one because it was the best action I could get at the time for my budget. I got very used to them. I stuck with the Savage Action because they worked well for me, however I am moving on to my first Custom a BAT M because I have earned it. (my wife will disagree ;) )

My dasher is a Savage and the way it shoots I am sticking with it.

Seems like this kind of Savage beating comes up once a month or so. It gives me a good laugh. Some can not get past the Accutrigger once they have shot a Jewel. ;D I on the other hand have both and others, will continue to shoot them all. You cannot compare one to the other, that would be insane. ::) Carry on, this is good humor. ;D

Couldn't agree more. Like comparing a factory Chrysler Hemi to one that rolled out of Ed Pink or Keith Black's shop.

I have two PTA's. I see it like this. They shoot outstanding even with the accutrigger for me. 1/4 moa is 1/4 moa. I could afford a bat or whatever but just couldn't justify it to myself. The only advantage I see is if you are a runner in benchrest competition as customs are smoother. Although after having mine T&T, is pretty darn nice. Another reason I chose the PTA is that I could change the barrel myself very easily. I just don't get how someone could bash a Savage.

I would classify the PTA as a DIY action or entry level. I have 2, the last came as just the action and not on a gun. Finish was very rough.

Both actions shoot very well (FTR) but both have had work. Bolt lift mods, larger od bolts etc to function smooth enough to be satisfied with. I do my work myself and have rather enjoyed doing all the mods myself. From sleeving the bolt to a larger od to making the bolt lift kit with external adjuster.

I also really like the target accutrigger! Like a two stage for me..

I do enjoy all the "adjustability" the savage offers....bolt head swap, firing pin adjustability, ease of barrel swap for the DIY type etc..

I will always have them but a Barnard action is my next purchase.

Broncman, tell me about firing pin adjustability. New to the PTA.

The action will do ok, but even aftermarket triggers are not half as good as a Jewell trigger.

I've seen far more rifles broke down (DNF) or disqualified for AD from Jewell triggers than I have Savage triggers, factory or aftermarket either one.

That said, as much as I like my factory Target AccuTrigger, I wish there was more depth to the aftermarket trigger selection for Savage actions.

Maybe because the Jewell to Savage ratio on firing line is about 100:1? ;)

Really guys how can anyone compare a savage accutrigger to a Jewell ::)
But after reading all the replies the guy just wanted to know if the Savage PTA
was good for entry level competition ;)

The firing pin is adjustable for both depth and tension. You can dissassemble the bolt and measure and adjust the depth of the firing pin strike. You can also adjust the tension. Lighter tension makes easier bolt lift. Just dont go to far or you will not get reliable ignition.

You can also do the bolt lift mod that makes it easier as well. Some of the bolt lift mods add an adjustable set screw in the rear of the bolt so tension can be adjusted externally.

Lots of videos on you tube explaining this or search Nate Lambeth on this forum. He has a bolt lift mod kit offered through PTG. Or if you are like me and have access to a machine shop, very easy to do yourself!

Can't say for other disciplines, but based on what I saw on the line @ the 2013 FCNC and FCWC for the relays I was on (F/TR), I'd say your ratio might be just a fuzz off... ;)

Ed Pink, Keith Black. Boy are you dating yourself. You have to be a old drag racing guy like me to remember those names.
