Savage PTA

I have recently traded and acquired a Savage PTA, I have tossed the idea around of getting into some sort of competitive shooting. Is this action worth using for a competitive rifle, if so what class would you recommend and what caliber. It is a short action .473 bolt face. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

would not be afraid to use it if you are just getting into it. I like mine and there are quite a few Savage actions on the line. I know 5 people shooting one and they enjoy theirs.

You wanting to do Benchrest or Fclass shooting? Best to figure out what is near you that hold competitions and find out. That will help chose a caliber based on your goals

We have both classes at my local range, they have club shoots every month or every other month. I am leaning toward benchrest I am a little concerned about the accuracy. I would like to be competitive, I understand it takes a lot of practice and the right equipment to win. I would like to be competitive.

it should work just fine, would look at either a 6br or maybe a 6 dasher. Add good after market barrel and stock should be good to go. If you do not take to the accutrigger, replace with a Rifle Basix SAV-2 - just depends on how you take to the stock trigger (neither is a Jewel, so be warned)

I would lean more toward f-class with that action. In br you are giving up speed by using that action, and being able to shoot fast in a condition is very important. In f-class it is no handicap. look at the 284 for f-class and the 6 dasher for br.

The best use for these actions is to use them in national competition ( F Class or long range bench rest) and;

Embarrass the hell out of the competition!!

Use the action you have, buy a good quality barrel, chamber it for a 6Br, 6BRX, or Dasher, find a laminate stock for the discipline you decide you want to shoot and bed the action to the stock. Start reloading and having the fun of a lifetime. Your Savage action will surprise the heck out of you. For a newbie I would stick with the 6Br to start as there is no fireforming involved. You can always try an improved version the next time around.

I have been shooting two rifles on the PTA. One in .284 and one in 6mm Dasher.(just sold the .284 though) Went from bone stock to adding a better trigger (Rifle Basix SAV-2), a PTG Bolt Body, Bolt Lift Kit, Custom Recoil Lug, Extended bolt handle and Gre-Tan bushed bolt head and turned firing pin, and a custom PRT stock on both rifles. They both have won matches for me ahead of the Custom actions. By adding simple aftermarket parts it really smooths out the action and gives it a more "custom feel".

Just as James Crofts has proven......They will win the big matches!

Thanks everyone for the advise. I have been shooting all my life but relatively new to this. Any suggestions what might be the best barrel for 6mm br and who makes a quality stock.

My buddy just put a Bartlein on his. I shot a sub 0.2" 5-shot group at 200 yards yesterday

Pick a barrel maker that you can find with shortest wait or on here for sale. Seen some in past week on here at decent prices

The biggest problem with the Salvage PTA is that the trigger is a PTA - hence the action name!

The action will do ok, but even aftermarket triggers are not half as good as a Jewell trigger. For as much work as Petros284 did to his action he could have just bought a Kelbly Atlas for about $850.00 and been better off. Va Jim did win the 2012 F-T/R Nationals with a Salvage, but even he got tired of it and now shoots a Borden action, which is also a wonderful action.

I am a happy savage owner amongest other makes however the trigger was designed by an idiot.However with the advent of the accutrigger which everyone copied it is remarkably better than ever.I have fired my PTA with unreal results so to say they are salvage's unless you cant appreciate all firearms you are being ridiculous.Savage has put factory class on the map and has offered affordable firearms to compete with which the big 3 havent done squat.I love my jewel but it doesnt feel really different to my shilens,they break like glass.Truth be known we as a whole have become status symboled driven and to say that it cant be done is just ridiculous.If you put your mind to it,you can make it work.Just think of all the inventions from talented people which superceded the present technology.We dont have a gas pedal in our cars anymore so the drive by wire idiocy must be better than linkage that certainly never worked for nearly 100 years.The savage is just different,yea unrefined like jewells triggers which I had 3 jewells that didnt work out of the box,they fixed them but why,they are the best.Blow a primer and get back to me on that,the jewell will break because it is like a watch compared to stock factory triggers but still quite weak.And dont say you will never blow a primer because it happens to almost anyone that shoots often. I own a panda and I like it,But I dont own a blat.LOL

The savage PTA trigger is what it is. It's a cheaply manufactured trigger than can be set low and still satisfy the safety demands of the corporate lawyers. Call it a B/B-. Aftermarket triggers in the same action can be marginally better but still suffer from the original design constraints.

Try a Jewell, or some of the other finer dedicated target triggers and you'll know.

I agree. For a factory trigger I find no fault. In fact a Savage LRPV in 6BR is the most accurate factory rifle I've owned or fired. Factory is the operative word. That trigger puts other factory triggers to shame.

I have worked on my SAVAGE triggers and am quite happy with the way they break. I have also invited several other shooters to try the trigger and I haven't heard the first complaint yet.
