Savage "out of the box" results

I bought a Savage Mark II BTVS from Buds last week mostly to use as a practice gun for F T/R. I intend to do some work like cleaning up and removing burrs also I will barrel block it just like the .308. I took it out today before doing anything to it except mounting the scope and the bipod. The pics below say it all! this gun rocks straight out of the box! It was a bit windy with up and down gusts so I am sure it will do better.

Savage has always had a rep for right outta the box accurac. Looks like you got yourself a pretty good shooting practice gun.

Could you tell us about the .308? You mentioned a barrel block. Was this a factory stock that you added one to? Perhaps a picture or two?

Sorry if you are not impressed! I have seen posts on many forums with people complaining that their $2K rifle will not shoot sub 1MOA. I think for an out of the box $400 rimfire that's pretty good! Also I am a new shooter I have probably shot less than 100 rounds from any gun before I shot the Savage!

As for the barrel blocked .308 I am in the process of building this right now, I will post some pics in the near future. It has a Savage target action, lilja barrel and a modified Masterstock high power stock. I will be doing all the work including chambering myself. In fact I am off to the machine shop this afternoon to get a start!

I was actually confused, since you said it would be a practice gun for F-T/R, so rimfire in F-T/R ???

Then you talk about barrel blocking it, I thought that was only done to guns with very heavy barrels, but what do I know.

Anyways, don't be offended, I was just confused, that's all!

I am thinking of using the .22LR as a practice rifle just to get more trigger time at a reasonable cost! Also it looks like the 40g .22LR bullets have the same drop at 100 yards and 200 yards as the 155.5g .308 bullets at 300 and 500 yards respectivly so I thought this would give me a good practice for the longer distances with the .308.

As for the barrel block....I see a lot of people complaining about the action flex with respect to how tight the screws are on the savage mark II rifles, so I thought how best to relieve that stress? How about floating the action by using a barrel block? Maybe that will work?

Also the barrel is .800" bull barrel with a small wimpy action I think that could be classed as a heavy barrel comparitivly speaking anyway?

No offense taken!!!

Jon,
That is very good shooting for a rimfire @ 100 yards, My $1500 Cooper or my $1000 Kimber won't do any better. Have load's of fun my friend, trigger time is key ;)

I'm going to throw you a compliment. Less than 100 rounds fired in any rifle??? Good Lord! That makes this excellent shooting. I had probably fired 15-20,000 through a rimfire before I was ever able to shoot a group like that at 100 with anything. On the other hand as a child most of my shooting was at small critters of all varieties with a .22. Didn't get into punching paper until I had been in the Navy a couple years and the only places to shoot a gun in Jacksonville Florida were at designated ranges unless you wanted to be arrested.

Not being familiar with all of the Savage model numbers, and being primarily a CF shooter, I did not get that you were showing us a .22 rimfire 100 yd. group. I think that the reference to the .308 and barrel blocking were part of that as well. In any case. There is an old adage that applies here. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Seriously.....I think that all systems, including the shooter, were working well.
