cheapest accurate out of the box 204?

Hey guys. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on what would be the best bet for good accuracy out of the box on a 204r?

Right now I'm strongly leaning toward a savage 12 vlp dpm.

Seems like a lot of guys like their tikkas also. Anyway I'm kinda hoping to get 1/2 moa or better. Is this a long shot? I will be handloading. Anyway I welcome all opinions. Thanks.

You can find Tikka T-3's under $500 on the used market. The CZ and the Ruger will probably be somewhere in the $700 range. Both are accurate rifles. "Cheapest" would indicate the Tikka fits your requirements.

I've had good luck with any 204 ruger. I own a ruger all weather, savage model 25, and a cz 527 all 3 shoot .25 to .50 inch groups with handloads.
I love all 3 guns.

Don't look any farther than the VLP that you already have in mind. I have one and have been impressed with its accuracy since I fired the first break in shots.

Okay so by "cheap" I am thinking of around $1000 or less. Sorry I should have specified that earlier.

Wow seems like you CZ owners are proud. Maybe that is the way to go. I hadnt even considered CZ. What kind of groups are you guys getting?

Stevens short action 300 bucks
Shilen 204 barrel prethreaded and chambered midway usa 314
Trued and headspaced 250 gunsmith
And still have money for nice trigger with orginal stevens stock or keep trigger and buy aftermaket stock.
I have built several for under a 1000 and all shoot sub .5 moa

Agree with Jortz, get a action and a barrel build what you want. Take a look at Northland Shooter Supply website and price it out. BYW not to stir the pot but Savage is the most accurate out of the box gun period, Not pretty and not a Gucci gun everyone likes around the inter web but it is a performer at a very good price.

I would buy everything from Jim at Northland Supply: 1-763-682-4296 Get a criterion or shilen prefit and a rifle basix trigger(sav-2) and make that stevens or savage come alive.Dont true it unless it shoots bad which wont happen.

I just ordered a barreled target action from Jim. It was over $900 with no stock. We have several CZ rifles and the all shoot well. I would look at the 527 varmint. Our 308 will shoot 1/2-3/4" with just about everything we've put through it.

Although this may not be a concern for some, I prefer the factory CZ over putting together a gun from parts simply becquse of the ease of resale. I have never had a problem getting my money back on a CZ. Though I have had to take a somewhat mediocre loss on savage parts such as used barrels and stocks and actions. A while back I came hard up for some quick cash and the CZ sold in one day and i actually made a little off of it compared to what my original purchase price was. So thats also one other thing to consider.

Buy a CZ 204 have a smith tune up the trigger and you won't have to worry about doing any thing else to it. If for some reason it doesn't shot(they all put out a dude once in awhile) For a 100$ +or - depending on which barrel you choose you can get a green mountain barrel put on and buy the time your done your into it for less than 1,000$. Don't overlook the green mountain barrels because of price

This may surprise you. I have owned two CZ 527's. One was an American the other a Varmint. Both shot well (.75-.50) after trigger adjustments and some extra material taken out of the barrel channel and good handloads were worked up. Two Savages shot much the same. Those guns cost me $500-700. All four guns would shoot factory ammo into about an inch.

I recently bought another 204 (last december). It is a TC Venture standard barrel not heavy. It came new in the box with bases, and has an adjustable trigger (which I lowered) and with a TC mail in rebate of $50.00 cost me $300 plus tax. I mounted a 4.5-14 Sightron SII and went to the range. Factory Hornady V-Max 32's and 40's went into .5". Handloads go into .25-.50".

The other thing I like about the rifle is the crown, the magazine and the 5R rifled barrel. Another thing I like is the barrel is a 1-10 twist and the stock has some Hogue inserts.

It worked very well this spring on some chuck hunts.
