Most accurate out of the box?

I know all about the subjective nature of this question with all the variables that go with it, but I will ask it anyway. ;)

I am moving on and replacing my Remington 700p and looking for another .308 that I will keep the way it came from the factory, except for bedding or maybe tweak the factory trigger).

I would like to stay in the $1000 price range, gun only).
It will be used for shooting off a benchrest and rear bag @ 100/200 yards only.

What out of the box .308 do you think would fit the bill the best. ,not another 700p though).

Thanks.

Are you only looking for a factory gun?

If not, Mark Lammers, http://www.losokcustomarms.com/, can do custom builds. His page says 1/2 moa on target/tactical rifles. But most of his recent builds that I've heard about are closer to 1/4 moa. He can easily build you a rifle for your $1000 budget. He prefers Mauser actions, but will build most anything.

Yeah unfortunately it has to be a mass produced factory gun. Im using it for club matches in "factory class" hunter benchrest.

Thanks for the tip though, Im going to check into his work for another build im considering.

Remington 700 5R, IF you can find one.

The Savages are tough to beat too...especially for the $$.

I was actually thinking about the Savage 10fp. However I dont see anything about the LEB2 on the website. Is that the one with the HS precision,McMillan, or some other stock? For 100/200 yard BR shooting would you get the 24" or 20"

I've heard good things about the 5R as well but I cant find one available, I think the only make a limited number a year if Im not mistaken.

Thanks guys.

The 5r's are only about 500 per year. I actually found one at a local shop and got it, along with a package deal, for just a bit over dealer cost,I have an ffl and have been on hold to get one forever). But, there are a few out there on Gunbroker and Gunsamerica, but at the $1000 mark.

Another gun to think about, though they are getting hard to find, is the Tikka 595 Master sporter. In testing by American Rifleman, .308 Master Sporters shot around a half-MOA.

Thats a nice looking rifle, I wonder if it would ride the bags?

The Savage FTR looked good as well with the 6 ounce trigger and new target action but it has a rail running down the center of the forend for a bipod, so that made it useless to me shooting off a rest.

nonliberal,
you are right Savage discontinued the 10FP-LEB2 but there is always their new F/TR its also a real shooter and keep checking for the right price Shoot Strait teele1

Savage is still cataloging the 10FP with a McMillan stock see http://www.savagearms.com/10fpmcmillan.htm

This is the gun I would purchase. The F-T/R stock is really a POS. Otherwise, I would look for a 10BVSS whihc is no longer in production or a LRPV http://www.savagearms.com/12PrecVarm.htm but it is not made in 308.

I purchased a Tikka Master Sporter back in March of 2001. It is a 22-250 and it is definitely a super-good shooter. I think you will really have to scour the world to find one now. I believe they quit making them shortly after I bought mine. I think the Whitetail model and now the T-3 model have replaced the old Tikka Master Sporter.

The bottom of the forearm on my Master Sporter is set up with I think what is called a European type accessory rail. For the most part, the bottom is pretty wide and flat, except for the recess for accessories to slip into the rail. I used Varget with the 40 gr. Nosler BT and during my tests I had three casings loaded with 39.5 gr. of Varget behind that bullet. After the first shot over the chronograph I decided to pull the bullets on the other two casings!!!! Here's a photo of the readout on the chronograph.

The load I settled on was 38.4 gr. of Varget and it has been a super-accurate load for me. Here's a photo of the first live critter I shot at. I was using a 40 gr. Nosler BT bullet that left the barrel slightly under 3,950 fps. The shot was taken from 165 lasered yards. DRT

I hope you can find one of these Tikka Master Sporters. Very accurate right out of the box!
