Savage Model 12 in 22BRX

A customer sent me a Savage Model 12, with a PT&G 22BRX reamer. A Rock Creek Barrel followed about three weeks later. The attached are two targets shot this adternoon, one by me and the other by Matt McDermott. Matt's group was seven shots under .20. This was the best group he has ever shot. My group was under .22 and these groups were the first shots fired in this rifle. Not bad for a working mans gun. When the owner finishes painting the stock and begins working up loads he should not have to do much.

nice shootin and the owner should be very satisfied. The stock,is it factory? if not what is it.Do you have a picture of the rifle?

That's really nice. I'm not familiar with the brx. Is the shoulder a bit different or what? I'm puting together a 22br. on a Savage 112 as we speak. "Rusty", I've got some questions I just posted on the reloading forum concerning this. Do you think you could have a look?? They are listed under, "newbie at neck turning"...

Those groups are amazing for the first fire forming groups from the gun..

The BRX Cases have the same shoulder as the BR. They are reloaded with standard BR dies backed out .100. The necks are shorter to compensate for the longer case. They are simply fireformed in the chamber. A body die is used to full length size the case at the web. This can be done with a stadard .243, .260, 7mm/08, or .308 die with the decapping pin removed or one can make or buy a body die.

Neck trimming is a subject into itself. Some shooters have reamers made for chambers that will require neck turning other don't. That is a personal preference. Attached is a photo of the 22BRX in a .247 neck configuration.

It might just be the picture, but it looks like your not cutting the neck far enough. Is the cut stopped well before neck shoulder joint?

The shoulders were turned about have the way down the shoulder.

The shiny neck is from the .244 necking die in the Redding S die.

The brass was sent to me by the cusomer already turned.

Steve:

I have removed the scope and bases, cleaned this rifle for return to the owner. The used Stockade stock is going to be repainted by the owner. Here are a couple of pictures. As you can tell the action and barrel have been polished.

nice work Nathaniel,a friend of mine is contemplating a Savage build and I was wondering what stock you went with. Can you tell me what contour that barrel is? Thanks for the pictures.

Steve:

This rifle is a 1.200 X 3.5" tapered to .884 at 28".

Remember the standard Savage Barrel nut wrench will not fit over a barrel over 1.200.

The stock is a Stockade LT BR model. Kevin Rayhill makes them. It is a very good feeling light weight rigid stock. Kevin is supplying several of my Savage Shooters with stocks.

I have done barrels for over 100 model 12 single shots. The all have been shooters.

Reed Garfield may be the exception. I worked on his action but did not barrel it. He was going to shoot a prefit .223AI barrel and could not get it to group. I asked him to let me barrel action with a custom chambered barrel, but he has choosen not to persue my offer. He was going to take a barrel off another gun that shot well and give it a try. I have not heard back from him.

Nathaniel, thanks for the information and the reply.I have never worked with a Savage but I sure have a great deal of respect for their accuracy potential.

By the way folks the customer has shot this rifle and reports to having shot several single digit groups with it. I will be looking for his name to appear in the winners circle. It will be interesting to see if a working class man's rifle can be competitive in the Light gun BR class.
