New Savage Model 12

Well I put my new 6mm Savage model 12 togerther with a Weaver T-36, and took it to the range for the first time yesterday. At 100 yards for sighting in, the group with a 90 gr lapula was .533. With the 105 gr lapula smallest group and last was .405. I know this is not great. But a new gun, factory ammo, and old guy that has not shot a any kind of rifle in 20 years, it made my day. I really enjoyed it......

Well done - nothing to be ashamed of, especially from a factory rifle! You'll possibly find it'll do better still with use. These Savages usually need about 200-250 rounds through them before they give their best - the barrels are well-dimensioned, but a bit rough when new.

It will be fun to work up some loads and finish the break in and see what it will do. Alot of the Savage guns respond well to a skim bed.

Good Job, Its common for us older guys, that use to shoot, then get all involved in making a living for 20 to 35 years. Then retire and get back into shooting, its a bit like riding a bike, you get it back quick.
Have fun.

Shot410: That's Right! You can always telll an old Marine - but you can't tell him much!

As far as the 6mm BR in the Model 12 goes, I just got one about 3 weeks ago and just put an 8 x 32 Elite 4200 scope on it. I had a custome built 6mm BR with a a 1-8 twist last year (This new one also has the 1-8 twist). Last years model was superbly accurate, but would not shoot Lapua or Hornady bullets that well (because of the Kreiger barrel diameter). I am hoping that this new Savage will be able to shoot all of the heavy weight bullets, because I have quite a few of the 105 grain Hornady A-max. Anyone else have a Savage Model 12 with experience with other heavy weight bullets?

Curious as to why the barrel diameter would have anything to do with what weight bullets a barrel will shoot

It doesnt really have to do with bullet weight but how skinny some bullets are. The lapuas run a little skinny, while the the smk 107s run a little fatter. Same way with Bergers or so they say. Ive shot lapua 105s out of mine with 28.5 grains of h4895 and got good results. But now im gona try R15 and smk 95s.

ALO,
I have a Savage 12 benchrest dual port 1-8 twist 29" and it loves 105gn A-Max bullets! It likes them especially when pushed by 30.1gns of Varget. I have run some 105gn Lapua factory loads down the barrel and they did not shoot as well as the A-Max's. I hope they work as well for you.

Regards,

Scott

I've been shooting a factory savage f-class 6br in a local 300 yard match with really good results. For a while i thought it liked the 105 amax's til during the match yesterday i had 6 rounds with 107smk's over 30.1 varget with br-4 primers just touching the lands. i shot a 3 shot group at the beginning of the match with a clean barrel and the group was around .3 at 300. i thought i was a fluke, so after the match i did it again and got a .4 group. Both groups were one hole slightly vertical so i think i accidentally found a better load for that rifle.
Now if i could just get the BRX to do the same thing...

Nice shooting...I have the the savage target action repeater in 6mmBR that I"m trying to sell or convert to a 6.5 Grendel, it shoots .125-.3 at 100 yrds...
So I have a question if everyone doesn't mine. Using that action, can I convert it to a 6.5 Grendel? or what can I convert it to? I dont' reload so 6mmbr is getting too expensive for me to shoot as often as I do.

The Grendel has a smaller case-head diameter than the 6BR (which is the same as the .308W and most cartridges of that size), so you'd need another bolt-head in a non-standard size so far as the factory range is concerned.

Since you don't handload, I'd suggest anything based on the .308W case or similar - .308W, .243W, 7mm-08, .260 Rem, 6.5 Hornady Creedmoor Match, and a fair few more all widely available as factory ammo. Any of these is a straight re-barrel, and in most if not all cases you can get a good value PacNor or similar prechambered and threaded barrel - a DIY swap job with the Savage barrel nut wrench and chamber gauge only needed plus a padded vice. (Go onto the Savage Shooters Forum and use search.)

The 6.5 Creedmoor might be your best bet.
