Savage Model 10 Barrel Twist

I have a “new to me” Savage Model 10 in .223 REM. I was wondering if this barrel marking indicates it has a 1 in 12” twist rate, as I could not find the specifications for this particular model. It is marked SP12 at the base of the barrel.

"SP" means Savage Proof. The number following in the inspector's number. However, I think the M is a 1:9 twist on a 223. Mine is mark M - yours is MT. My 1:7 twist 223 is a M7. You need to break out a cleaning rod to determine the true twist for sure.

I appreciate the response, even though I was disappointed that there was not a definitive answer based on my code.

So I finally got out the cleaning rod and determined it has a 1:9 twist. I was skeptical about well I could measure it, but I tried six times and every measurement I made was between 9.0 and 9.25”, so I was fairly pleased with the consistency of the results considering my crude technique.

My m10 is a 1;9 but I think Savage also did some with a 1;12

Run a snug patch in most of the way. Mark the cleaning rod at a place that can be repeated. Pull the cleaning rod out until the mark rotates to the same radial position. Mark the rod again. Measure between the marks.
