Savage 1:7 twist barrel

I have a Model 12 LRPV in 223 with a 1:7 twist barrel. I am having a Krieger barrel installed and the gun set up as a switch barrel.

My question is this: I would like to re chamber the Savage barrel and be able to shoot 1000 yard F-Class with it. What cartridge would you guys recommend?

I am considering the 22BR, but wondering if it would be enough of an improvement over the 223 chamber using N-550 powder and heavy 22 caliber bullets to be worthwhile making the brass and buying dies for.

Thanks

The FClass F/TR class only allows the 223 or 308.

The Open class is naturally open to any caliber. I would think that your rechambering, which would automatically put you in the Open class, with a 22 cal bore would probably be a significant disadvantage compared to the 6 and 6.5s which are dominating the Open class.

With the 1-7, I would look at the straight 22-250 if you want to do that. Standard dies BR quality, quality brass and reamers should be at most smiths.

I would pick either the 80 or 90 grain bullets seat them and have the smith throat for those bullets, or order a reamer to fit.

Thanks for the imput.

I know the 22 CF caliber puts my wife at a distinct disadvantage, but she is shooting with me now and does not like the recoil of my heavy 308 Palma rifle. I do not want her to get kicked around as it took me 22 years to get her to the range.

She is now having a great time shooting RF Silhouette, beats me and most of our Club members) and loves shooting her other 223 at local 2-300 yard prone Club Matches.

Besides, I will have an extra barrel.
