savage long range precision varminter

Hi all,

Could any one tell me about the savage long range precision varminter. Any reports on them, accuracy expectations, any thing really because A mate of mine is thinking about getting one when they hit australia. any info would be much appreciated.

I read an article on one in a varmint hunting magizine and it did not shot as good as i thought that it should . He was getting groups from .750''to 1'' . I didn't think that was to good for what it is, of course that is one man and one report, i don't have any personal experiance with one just thought i would let you know what i read . :,

I read an article in shooting times and they said savage was going to use a different barrel to titen things up.As well as a few other changes.

You might want to go over to www.savageshooters.com and ask the same question. As it is right now I don't think they shoot any better than the model 12 Varminter low profile single shot.
Now if they spring for some good custom barrels that should tighten things up, BUT then the price will go up exponentially also.

In a few months Savage will start selling bare actions. And, I'm told, you'll be able to buy one with the 6-oz. "precision" Accutrigger. To me, that's the way to go. Put on a good custom barrel and laminated stock.

$415 is the first price I have seen. The Target actions all have the 6oz Target AccuTrigger. These actions are a larger shank - 1.120", and are 223 or 308 bolt face and RBLP or RBRP. They have 3 attaching screws, and it is custom stocks right now. Source of information: "Savage target actions" topic on "Savage Bolt-Action Centerfires" forum on savageshooters.com .

Thanks for the heads-up. I was about to pull the trigger on a .223 varmint rifle from Savage, but, with this development, I think I'll just go with an action, a custom barrel, and a stock from Sharpshooter Supply.

Pre-fit barrels for the 1.120" shank don't seem to be available yet. Even for custom barrels, it is not completely straightforward. To get a price for a Lothar Walther custom barrel, you specify the custom options on the following web page, but I don't see how you specify a 1.120" shank.

No, some of the older magnum calibers did as well. I believe the WSM's had the large shank.

As to ordering from Lothar Walther, I spoke to Woody at SHOT about this, just send them a sketch with all the dimensions that you want and specify Savage thread, they'll send you the quote to make it. It seemed pretty danged reasonable as well. Real nice guys to talk to, I'm setting aside pennies to get a new one.

I gather the RUMs and WSMs in any model use a large shank. Understanding this stuff is a work-in-progress, but it seems "large shank" is not now enough to specify the action to barrel threading and a measurement,e.g. 1.120") is necessary as well. I believe I have seen it suggested a number of times that the LRPV is the same shank measurement as the target action,same action, and as of 2007 the LRPV trigger is 6oz as well).

Otherwise you'll end up with a SAMMI-spec chamber which could be WAY oversize with a freebore that's completely wrong for the bullets you want to shoot. I just discussed this with Woody a few days ago, and their pre-fits are just SAMMI unless you go with custom dimensions.

I guess I should open a new topic but since we are here, what complete set of specs would be good for a varmint 6mmBR dedicated to shooting with the 75gr VMax?

Others will differ but I'd do a current Kiff or JGS minimum spec chamber, .272" neck, 1.5 deg leade, .065-.075 Freebore,as Kiff and JGS measure it). If you get a 9 twist, you can shoot the Berger 95 VLDs if you ever want to do long-range varmint matches. They have a very short bearing surface so the ogive hits the rifling about the same place as the 75s. If you have no interest in the bigger bullets, go 12-twist and shoot the 75 V-Max or 80-grain Bergers. The Bergers are super-accurate.

Looking at that thread again, it looks more like there is only one large shank measurement, but there was confusion about what that one measurement was and it appears to have been resolved as 1.120" .
