Savage 12 Long Range Precision Varminter

Savage 12
I haven't treated myself to a varmint gun in many blue moons. I have several nice ones but when I started BR again 1993 nothing varmint interested me. A long time ago I was interested in the Savage 112V, 1975-79, the first of their varmint guns. Simple gun in several good calibers the .223 would have been my choice. But this was the time I was buying Model 12's doing allot of trap shooting and bird hunting.
When I started BR the second time I saw what it took to win aggregates at a BR Shoot. I let it bother me too much on the other guys Forum when the Savage guys would come claiming 1/4 " all day long with a factory rifle. I knew they were full of crap but they kept claiming and I kept asking them to prove it. Finally I made an offer that has never been attempted and has an open end offer. Simple bring any factory Savage rifle to my Range, San Gabriel, bring me $100 for nuisance money, shoot an agg 5 groups/5 shots each, agg .25 or less and you can win $500. Never a call never a comment. When you are asked to shoot under the clock and a moving backer that catches all shots brags die away.My contact info is in San Gabriel web www.sgbenchrest.com.
Not being crass but I know what kind of gun it takes to shoot a benchrest agg.
Back to the Savage 12 this gun has accuracy spelled all over it. With 26" barrel and 12 lbs sounds similar to my first BR gun. I would choose the .223 though the 22-250 would do also. The trigger is similar to my Canjar set which do me fine. Barrels always make the gun so only having the Savage barrel to work with we will see. If the guns weight became too cumbersome one could cut it back to maybe 22", would be easier to handle. Never cared for many factory varmint guns but I could like this one.
Scopes would be a tough choice I think I would start with a Leupold 6.5X20 only because I have one. Since I make my own 22 cal. bullets I would start with 53 grn bullets. Lapua .223 cases or WCC 64 Nams. I would select WW 748, I 4198, I 4895, H 335, Varget. Primers would be WSR. I would go with a Redding die set but an RCBS would do just fine.
The gun reminds me of a 40 X. I think I would like the balance and straight comb stock. With a reasonably good barrel and a higher power scope I feel I could shoot 1/2" groups at 200 yds with flags of course. I said me probably not you. I give this gun a thumbs-up. It looks like a shooter. Savage web www.savagearms.com.
