New Savage Long Range Precision Varminter

I spoke with Cathy at Savage this morning and she tells me the new Long Range Precision Varminter will begin shipping next week.
Product number for the .223 version will be 17981.

I thought long and hard about one of these for my son, but since he's only nine, we'll stick with the Model 12 Low Profile Single Shot for now,it will be a bit lighter, and easier for him to manage). FYI Product number is 17686 for the .223 model in the low profile single shot configuration.

I plan on doing a father/son project to include bedding/scope
mounting/load work-up/ proper cleaning/ and finally shooting so hopefully he'll learn the right way from the start. Perhaps we'll do a gun of the week on the entire process.

Dreever,
Sounds like a great project with you and your son. My dad taught me how to shoot and bought me my first .22. 30 years later I am now buying him guns!!
FWIW I think your move with the low profile rifle is a good one. I talked for a while with Fred at SSS while I was in the shop one day, and he and I both felt the same way...the 22-250 is really the only "Long Range",600yds+) capable cartridge of the three offered, and yet they are offering it in a 1:12 which is no more an advantage over any other gun out there. Maybe if it were a 1:9 and you could push some 75 A-max's, but it's not much more than a hyped up model 12 if you ask me. The HS precision stock is nice...but you still have to bed that aluminum block to get it right. Is is worth the extra $200 for that....
The RBLP is nice, too, but unless you are shooting off a bench it is sort of a disadvantage in the field IMHO.
Good luck with your project, and keep your son shooting safe.
