Savage F Class Stock Splitting

This is a photo of my Savage F Class, originally in 6BR, now with a Criterion 6.5X47 barrel on it. I've had the rifle for about five years, and this morning at the range, I happened to look on the left side near the tang, and noticed a fine line. I took it into the light, and took this photograph of it. It's clearly splitting, and I don't know why.

I was getting ready for our monthly 600 yard match Saturday, and it was shooting very accurately....so I may get past this event OK. However, I'm sure I need to replace the stock.

Two questions: 1) why is it splitting? 2) suggestions please on where to find my next Benchrest or F Class stock?

Never saw one crack there. They usually crack on the wrist. Laminated wood should be stronger. I would do what Snowpro said and send a picture or call Savage. Matt​

It sure is a strange place for a crack. And in a laminated stock no less. Maybe with all the actions screws out and the recoil lug given a ½" head start!
Even putting the butt against a tree and firing it, it is the wrist that splits. Really odd.

I sent a "service request" via email with the photo attached. I'll look forward to their response.

Part of my problem is that I only have this one "long range" rifle, and have matches on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month.

I did look at McRee, but didn't find a stock suitable for my use....looks more "tactical."

It can be epoxied and pinned. Would be great to figure out what caused the crack in the first place - does look like it was dropped or run over.

Thats a weird crack. Looks like it had some kind of severe trauma to it not like an over time splitting

I would agree with this. If the wood is not sealed on the inside around this area and the stock experiences environmental changes ( low humidity to higher humidity or temperature) it can contract and expand against the action that could cause this after firing if the action is moving.

Unless it was damaged in an unforeseen accident, it should be considered a warranty issue. Definitely call Savage and send them this link. It has the photo and will make public their customer service commitment.

Is the action bedded/pillared to the stock-
It appears by the pic that the action is not setting down into the inlet.

Though it is a Salvage,I wouldn't suggest attempting to fix the stock as it will always be on your mind.

Very unlikely.....it's either in my gun room, or traveling in an air conditioned car to a match/practice, then home again. I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't think that's it. George

It looks like it's floated at the rear like it should be, and it really is a easy fix if they don't replace it...
No clue what may have caused it though....
