Savage action opinion

Long time lurker first time poster. Looking for any and all opinions on an action for a build. I recently received 2 new CBI barrels in the mail (20practical and 260 remington ) and am having a delima on what to mount the 260 on. I have in my inventory a single shot right port right eject accutrigger a stainless long action accutrigger ( in case i needed extra mag space? And a standard short action with a rifle basix. The single shot is a complete model 12 204 Ruger but id be willing to tear down if it was worth it. Other 2 are action only. Mainly looking to punch paper and ring gongs out to 600. Any advise out there

I'm a long time lurker too, though I think I might change that.

Anyway, Savage actions are fine. I would take a factory Savage action over a factory Remington action any day. I don't see any problem with them. The Target actions are the better of em, but the 12s seem nice too.

I have nothing against savage, but if you do have a Remington action in your inventory it would be a good time to use it. Long Rifles Inc. has an open group buy going right now and enough people have participated that their Tier 1 action accurize jobs are running $125 with decent turn around times.

The savage is nice because you can get the tools and do it yourself and learn a ton in the process. If done properly with a quality barrel you can have very good results. My only gripe with savage actions is the bolt lift is a little hard. I have a model 12 that is now a 6br an fcpk in 223 and a few other similarly priced guns. If I had to do it all over I wish I would have got my sake trg 22 in 308 right away. It's that good. I will say if your anything like me once your done with building your savage you will end up having something else built off a true high end custom action or get a purpose built military style tactical rig.

I put my .260 barrel on a long reciever and can let the bullets hang out wherever they want.I have since changed it to a singleshot but it worked good. The target actions are way more stout if you have one use it.

Thanks guys. For me its the pride in building it myself. Bottom line is it will probably shoot better than me no matter what direction i go. I think i will try the 12 action. Beauty of it is, if i dont like it or change my mind midstream, i can change it.

Put the 20 practical barrel on the single shot Mod 12 actions, small bolt face already, and put the .260 Rem on one of the other actions assuming one of them has a .308 bolt face? That's just me though!

Anyone ever buy the action and have it timed and trued? I have been looking to do a build, however I just keep reading and getting confused. When I seem to have my mind made up someone suggests for the Savage action and T&T to be done I'm at a custom action price point. Any thoughts?

Been mucking with Savage actions for quite a long time.

They work superbly and can tuned into very nice handling receivers. Out of the box, the bolt lift can be very clunky and that is what proper bolt timing addresses. I am in Canada so cannot help you in the US.

When done properly, the bolt lift is much lighter, smoother and can run with a well tuned Rem 700 and some customs.

As for accuracy, they all do the same thing - repeater or single shot - so just pick the layout that suits your end use and go for it. There is no accuracy benefit to the single shot target actions but more convenient if single loading vs putting in a single shot follower to make a repeater a single shot.

I am also not a fan of the target accutrigger. Some just will not stay as light as they suggest. I prefer the Rifle basix 2 unit.... far more stable adjustments.

The reg. accutrigger is great as a hunting weight trigger.

Shouldered or nut headspace is up to you. Again, when done properly, no accuracy difference.

Good luck with your project.

Aren't the single-shots theoretically "stiffer" actions compared to those with magazines, in the same way that a short action is theoretically "stiffer" (and possibly more accurate) than a long action because it supposedly strains less under recoil?

I've heard people say that, FWIW, anyway. Might just be Internet folklore.

All those years ago when I was a child, I thought I was building things with my tinker toy set, now I find out I was just putting things together.... ;D Erik, you have to find some humor in this, just could not resist.

I find humor in many things as a matter of fact. Actually, you guys make me laugh much more than you think. ;)

Have a good weekend guys, I need to go build some ammo! ;D

LOL and dying. ;D I remember my oldest daughter being potty trained. Now, I don't know if she built it or put it together, however the result was the same. Sorry if it offends but I can't stop laughing to save my life.

So when you assemble wood with nails is it building a house or putting one together ? :o

If you have to do any cutting and fitting to the wood, it's building. If it's a kit where all you need to do is assemble it, it's putting it together.

Trigger is the problem, and availability of parts like stocks. Remington wins those contests, hands down.
