Savage Accutrigger replacement

The SAV-2 trigger arrived in the mail yesterday and I installed it this morning. Either I got lucky or they really did make some improvements to the trigger. It now comes mostly pre-assembled so it really is a "drop in" replacement.
The only problem I had was with the sear pin holes on the new trigger. They were a RCH small. A few swipes with a round file and everything fit perfectly. After adjusting the back lash and safety set screws I replaced the trigger pull spring with the lighter one and put a gauge on it. 2.7 oz. A little light for me so I adjusted it to 4.5 oz and locktited the set screw. During this process I was slamming the bolt home, knocking the receiver against my work bench, and even dropped the butt of the floor and it stayed cocked and locked so I'm happy.

maybe you got lucky. Mine passed all the safety tests like you did but when I got the the range I had issues. Also try putting it in SAFE then fire position and see what happens. Mine would drop the sear every time. So I never used the safety

Re: Savage Accutrigger problems

Hi,
I have been shooting the savage model 12 for a year now (great rifle) but recently big problems with the accutrigger locking up on every push forward of the bolt. In addition, when I cock the bolt it will engage the safety accutrigger mechanism (the main sear blocker) - it took me a while to figure this out it was the bolt movement or rather the force used to cock it.

I found that if you take the stock off and tighten the trigger spring (turn clockwise) and clean the groove, which the sear sits in, of any oil, gunk etc the trigger works as normal again even with a firm force of locking the bolt.

I am unsure if during use the screw which increases the trigger pull rotates anti clockwise and effectively lightens the trigger pull thus restarting the initial accutrigger problem.

Please let me know if you have these problems and your fix.

Thanks,

Hawk.

Both of my PTA accu triggers came with white lube in the sear. If you wipe that area clean you will end up with more trigger pull. Basically a greased sear or clean sear area will require different adjustments to equal the same pull.
This is my accu-trigger modification for a fast trigger adjustment without taking the gun apart.

Hi,

Many thanks for the info. I won't be able to test my trigger with live rounds until the next range day, but really appreciate the photos and explanation about the lube.

thanks,

I have a Savage 223 with the Acu-trigger but it's not the competition one. I use the rifle in F-TR mid range competition. I set the trigger for the lowest trigger weight it would take and have had no issues. My shooting style is to have my thumb on the back of the trigger guard and my index finger on the trigger. I then pinch my index finger and thumb. This is very smooth and repeatable with no lateral pressure. This works very well for me on a light recoiling round like the 223.

That's a interesting technique which I will try as I like the sound of it. The problem I have was sear lock engagement system happened when closing the bolt. I have conditioned (though I must admit I sometimes forget trigger control when I get too impatient) myself to press the trigger correctly so I don't have an issue with the erroneous side trigger push which enables the sear blocker and then having to re-cock the bolt.
I am at the range next week and will see how the accutrigger functions with a increased trigger pressure setting and a cleaned up sear. So far all the dry fires seem to be fine but I won't know for sure until I have tested it with live rounds.
Thanks for the feedback boltman13.

Get your trigger set where you want it and be sure it is safe. Then put a drop of nail polish on the spring/screw and let it dry then go shoot to your hearts content. The nail polish should keep it from moving out of adjustment.

Thanks for info rjtfroggy much appreciated.

Hi,
In case anyone is interested. I went to the range and the accutrigger worked perfectly. Bolt operated as it should. Shot about 40 hand loaded rounds.

So my thoughts are cleaning the sear contact points and tightening the main trigger screw will lessen the possibility of the accutrigger blocker kicking in when closing the bolt. The trigger broke perfectly and I didn't notice any extra undesirable trigger pull.

Just want to say thanks for all of your input folks.
Much appreciated.
Hawk.
