Savage 284 build chamber questions

Looking at getting a prefit for a savage in 284 Win. Will be using Peterson brass and either 162 eldx or 168 Berger for hunting. Looking at a Shilen with a .317 neck and throated to shoot the above bullets. Will the neck diameter be ok without turning? The other option is a Criterion match chamber with .322 neck and .220 freebore.

.014 neck X 2 = .028, + .284 = .312.

Normal clearance. 003 - .005.

.315 - .317, look good.

when you headspace... headspace with a GO only, check the gauge then check the new brass, set the go with a little feel, I usually set headspace .002 over new brass..if this makes sense. sometimes I shoot 1 fireformed case just to see if I made the correct HS set if not I will tighten the HS a little more..been doing this for 5 yrs my brass hardly moves sizing is easy, accuracy is good, preferred barrels has the Shehane and other versions of the 284

Yes I’ve seen guys put tape on brass with about .002-.003 as a check.

From what I can see online the peterson necks run .0165-.017 which seems thick. If that's the case the .322 neck would be fine for .317-318 loaded round. They would actually need to be turned for the Shilen.

I'm running a 284 Shehane and have used both Peterson and Lapua brass.
I know from the records on my computer that my loaded neck OD measures .3155 to .316 with a Sierra 180gn Matchking and the Lapua brass
I'm not at home right now so I cant get a measurement on the loaded Peterson brass with a Berger bullet but I'm pretty sure it isn't any thinner.
My reamer has a .320 neck.
You may be able to chamber a round with a .317 neck chamber but you will have inadequate clearance without turning. For a hunting rifle I would go with the .322 neck and you should be fine no matter what brass or bullets you use. The 220 free bore should be fine.

I have a Bartlein prefit from bugholes in 284. It has a .317 neck and I had to turn my Peterson brass. I would go with a .322 if you don’t wanna turn. If I can find my note I am thinking the neck thickness on my new Peterson brass was around .015 to .0155 before I turned

Can someone tell me the free bore on this reamer print?

I ordered my last reamer at 0.320 for no turn with Peterson and the new Lapua. It seems perfect. I wouldn't go any smaller and 0.317 is too tight for sure. I would guess a freebore of 0.185 to 0.215 would be a good range. I shoot 175 eldx in a 0.235 freebore and that seems ideal.

.317 is a no turn neck chamber. I run that exact .284 neck. Great hunting set up. I set my chamber for 160-168 bullets.
