Sam Hall bore cleaning question

I copied Sam Hall's cleaning regimen recently, and have a question. Does anyone know if Sam dry-patches the bore before firing the first round? In his comments, the last thing he does is run a lightly oiled patch through the bore, then dry-patches the chamber. I've always dry-patched a rifle bore before firing it, but I've never won benchrest matches either.

In the same vein, do benchrest shooters fire a fouling shot before firing for record? In several rifles I've fired, the 1st shot goes slightly high and right from the rest of the string.

Good shooting, Tom

I know of people firing foulers, prior to shooting for record.

In the tiny club competitions I take part in, 99% of the people will fire anywhere from 1 - 10 foulers, depending on the time and format of the match.

I find that in my 6 BR and .260 with LW barrels, I typically will only get decent groups after about 3- 5 foulers.
