Safety Reminder Raccoons

My best friend got bit by one and had to get rabies shots for a month. I got tired of trying to trap one on my property, then gave in to the dark side. A half cup of Golden Malrin mixed with grape juice in a pie pan got him. No tracking necessary either. He didn't move 3 feet.
I'm having a coon problem getting into my cattle feed. Golden Malrin has been discontinued. Is there a substitute?
Thanks,

Lloyd

He has a feeding area with about 6 bowls he would fill and the coons would come in a feed right at dark. He had a bunch he said. He’s not happy about the whole thing. Said it was his fault. If you hit the brain it’s lights out but a head shot makes their coil spring unwind and they got long tight one if you know what I mean,

Cleaned right, remove glands on the legs and they are outstanding eating, we used to roast one instead of turkey at thanksgiving. My wife trapped one 45# and my uncle shot one over his coon hounds at 69#. Too bad the fur market is so bad on them, I snared a lot of them for their furs.

Not an issue in the British Isles, although it's surprising some wealthy idiot didn't introduce them onto a landed estate 150 years ago and create a major non-native species problem. The urbanised native fox is our nearest equivalent to a racoon, so we have to have top-lid wheelie rubbish bins that are too heavy for them to knock over, likewise can't manage to open the lids. Suburban idiots feed them too! There is an active post on our Stalking Directory Forum about problems around and public hostility to fox control on farms next to houses. (Stalking / stalkers = deerstalking in this context, not a forum for perverts following female media stars and weather presenters.)

We do have a couple of North American imports which are major pests though - grey squirrels and Canada geese.

After I watched a show about Raccoon Round Worm, I don't want anything to do with them. I can't remember all the details, but I remember the part about a guy having one of the worms grow inside his "EYEBALL"!!!!---- I want no part of anything that might introduce worms to my eyeballs. jd

Neighbor has been feeding coons in his back yards for years. About 6 pm yesterday he goes out with cat food and fills the bowls. Somewhat the high light of his day. He’s 78. Yesterday he was filling the bowls. A bitch coon, must have thought he was going to take the food. Bit his left first finger where it joins the hand. Hospital, shots and more shots. He’s ok. He destroyed all the feeders and brought me 30 lbs of cat food and said what John Wick said. “Kill em all.” Now I have to go into full pellet pusher mode. He said just just give me any details.
Same thanks we seem to get for public housing, welfare, free cell phones and ebt cards?

When are people going to understand that a wild animal is unpredictable?

They are not pets - they need to be treated with respect. Feeding them in your back yards is a formula for problems.

Racoons are especially troublesome. They are one of the prime carries of rabies and can be extremely aggressive.

A little common sense can go a long way in preventing these incidents.

Yeah, something like 80% of the north American population of coon carry it. It is transmitted through their feces. Nasty critters.

I get a few traveling the back fence on a regular basis, possums and squirrels, too. Thankfully none of my neighbors feed them, knowingly anyway. But, I live in the middle of a city, so plenty of stuff for those trash pandas to get into too. As long as its not my house.

My daughter tried to have chickens. After a valiant but loosing battle she gave up. My son is trying to have chickens now. Fighting a valiant battle. He has a golden retriever that will kill a racoon in a heartbeat. He tries to keep the dog away from the coons for the safety of the dog but if she sees a coon she's on it instantly.

This sweet thing is The Racoon Destroyer.

Some of the posts here make me think. Something I've noticed about people.

Some people will have unconditional love and admiration for something regardless of the consequences brought by the thing they so admire but only as long as those consequences come to others...their neighbors, their community, and so on. Right up until they are effected personally and then they instantly switch to hatred and vengeance. Or something even beyond vengeance.

No understanding of the natural order of things. No balance.

I won’t let my shepherds get near one when it’s in a trap at the house. They want to kill it but I don’t want them to get a bite or scratched nose. Too risky with rabies and other crap…
I put the dogs in the house and get the double deuce

I got this after a GTS
A rabid raccoon is usually dead within 1-3 days of becoming infectious, and even if you're bitten by a rabid raccoon, effective post-exposure treatment is available.

He the best neighbor I have. 78 years old. Will and has done anything in the world for me and others.. He just wanted to feed wildlife.. It all started when a huge tree blew over on the neighbors house. Coons were living inside tree and had young. I think mom got killed but not sure. He started feeding the little coons and went from there. Coons never caused any problems for me and others and we all knew he was doing it.. Then one acted out about fright about food. ( animals number one thing) He said he doesn't want to know any details of the harvest.. I'm sure he will miss his daily routine I'm sure but getting shot after shot for treatment will be a gentle reminder... I'm pretty sure these guys just aint gonna pack up and leave... They will start a path to find food...

Domesticated coons, never heard of them. Probably in the same isle at petsmart as the domesticated lions and tigers.

I have coon hunted a bit in years past. If folks knew what they are capable of they wouldn’t think they are cute.
Sorry the old boy got bit, made it to 78, figured he may have learned a few things by now. Never to old to learn.

yea coons are just vicious. lions and tigers don’t stand a chance.

any wild animal is capable of a lot when fighting for its life. it’s sad some people don’t have the will to live animals do.
