Safety Reminder Raccoons

When I had to go through the rabies shots, I was a week plus since contact, I felt very run down even walking wore me out. Took about a month after shots ended before I felt "normal". Wash your hands, avoid saliva and blood. Wear gloves while processing, no hand to eye, nose, mouth contact. Wash your hands.

We raised coonhounds and hunted them in nite hunts for many years. At one time
we found a baby coon in the middle of a highway and took it home and raised it .
When they get about 3/4 grown they do get "snappy" at any quick movements and that was also time to let them go to the outdoors, but they are cute and comical when they
are small.

My G-Pa liked to say someone was "crazier than a pet coon." He was wise.
A friend of mine feeds about 10 raccoons every nite on her back patio. They are not afraid of her walking a couple of feet from her. She will open the sliding door to take food out when they are only two feet from the door. They will surround her and follow her till she sets the food down. They are only feet from the door when she opens it and I told her that if one got in the house they are difficult to remove. You have to call the fire department for removal. I believe that if one bites you, you always have to get a series of rabies shots to be safe. I heard the shots are painful.

Can humans survive with rabies?

Once a rabies infection is established, there's no effective treatment. Though a small number of people have survived rabies, the disease usually causes death. For that reason, if you think you've been exposed to rabies, you must get a series of shots to prevent the infection from taking hold.Nov 2, 2021
Should you always get a rabies shot after being bitten?
Once a person is infected, there is not much a doctor can do to treat it. If a dog, cat, bat, or other mammal you might suspect has rabies has bitten you, get to the doctor. The first dose of the vaccine should be administered within the first 24 hours after exposure.Jul 22, 2016

The first symptoms of rabies may be similar to the flu, including weakness or discomfort, fever, or headache. There also may be discomfort, prickling, or an itching sensation at the site of the bite. These symptoms may last for days. Symptoms then progress to cerebral dysfunction, anxiety, confusion, and agitation. Death.

What is getting a rabies shot like?
Rabies vaccinations are given as injections in your arm. If you haven't previously had the rabies vaccines, you'll receive four injections over 14 days. If you have had the rabies vaccine, you'll have two injections over the first three days.Nov 2, 2021

What does it feel like to get a rabies shot?
Soreness, redness, swelling, or itching at the site of the injection, and headache, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle aches, or dizziness can happen after rabies vaccine. Hives, pain in the joints, or fever sometimes happen after booster doses. People sometimes faint after medical procedures, including vaccination.Jun 2, 2022

My most hated animal !
The past two Summers, I've had one that was intent on trashing the porch at my cabin with diarrhea. I just need to see that a couple of weeks in a row. Those coons are in raccoon heaven now......

Ive got something in my eye. Might be a dam worm. Had it for years. See it on the snow or lite backgrounds. Used to trap coons when they were worth something. Used to work for a fur buyer so I had plenty of chances to get one. You see em out in the daylight around here. That is how thick they are. I feed the s.o.b.s. in my bird feeders. Doug

As I recall, I was about 14 so that would be about 1964. A friend of mine invited me to go on a night coon hunt with some of the best coon dogs in Central Texas. We got to his house about sundown and he loaded up his dogs including this one bitch that he taped up with about 40 yards of electrical tape. He said she was coon crazy and would have killed herself trying to get out of the pen.
Got way out in the woods along a free flowing creek, built a small campfire, it was late Fall,
passed a bottle of peach brandy around and listen to the hounds. Suddenly he says they got one, peed on the fire and took off running. Fell in armadillo holes badger holes and kept on running. Finally get one treed and he would take his .22 pistol and keep shooting at that coon till it bailed and off we go again. RUN Forrest RUN. At the end of the hunt he would shoot the treed coon and let the dogs have it, a must do as they expect a reward.
I was only armed with a flashlight but it was the best five to six hours a 14 year old country kid could have. I'll never forget it and cherish the memory. Me and Stevie and Old Man Weibush with his eight coon dogs.

You get more shots when you have rabies( and the brain MRI shows no lesions). Once brain lesions appear no shots will be wasted on you. I got 6(arm,legs,butt cheeks) to start with, would have been 7 if I would have had a bite wound(one in the wound). Weekly shots after. Yes rabies can be spread just with saliva. I now will only need a booster if rabies exposure is suspected. I had the rabies virus for 10 days before shots, VERY lucky the virus went down my facial nerves, instead of going to my brain.

We must have the same friend, as my memories of hunting coons are almost exactly as yours.

Peach brandy.... dang, that was popular pastime waiting for the hounds to "fire up".

Thanks for bringing back the memories.

You are most likely seeing your own blood vessels in your eye(s) I especially see mine while goose hunting in winter and looking at the sky. If you try to focus on them, they move away.
