Rust proof and limited maintenance savage.

I have a savage 12 that I have had trouble with underneath the action rusting etc. even threw a new barrel on there and that cured it. But was still having issues underneath the action. I always took the barreled action out and cleaned it up and re-oiled. Climate controlled area inside my safe with humidity control etc. I have now fixed it as I dabble with some cerakote. Anyone else have this problem with savage? Only thing I could think of was to do the proper steps in cerakoting.

I had similar issues with a Contender that was exposed to some moisture. It rusted on the "down" side and no matter what I did it kept coming back. I wound up using KG Gunkote. Somewhat like Cerakote.
No more issues

Have you tried "Rust Prevent" spray? Once a year, I pull all my firearms out and spray and wipe. Have never once had any rust form on anything. Less permanent than Cerakote. I also use before taking guns into snow.

Funny you mention that. That is what i used on my wifes savage 110 last year and 2 years of no use i took the stock off and slight surface rust. No problem after a year but after two years of sitting it definitely was there. But not near as bad as the untreated rifle. But it has only happened on savage rifles for me. None of the other manufacturers have this problem in my safe.

Interesting. My highest maintenance rifle for keeping rust off of is a Savage .17 HMR. Barrel is stainless but that action seems to materialize rust just from my thinking of touching it.

My rifles are all hunting rifles. They are in the elements for weeks every year. If there not treated, they begin to show it. I Cerakote all my barreled actions from day one now. Even stainless barreled actions get cerakoted. While stainless won't rust, it does corrode to a certain extent if left without drying or cleaning during wet winter conditions and left to dry several days a year. Cerakote will not let this process occur. I did it to my woods carry pistol too.

I store all my guns in the long treated “zip lock” storage bags, after a good coating of WD Specialist. A lot of my guns are classics that can’t be cerakoted. No problems so far after 10 years of doing it.

I use the silicone treated socks, they seem to work. I do wipe them down with a lightly oiled rag before storage inside the socks. Remove the action from the stock and wipe it down once a year or after hunting season should take care of it. If the rifle gets used a lot in the elements or you live in a high humidity area such as Louisiana, Florida, etc.. it might take more care.

One thing about rust..... you have to stay after it or it comes back.

My only Savage is Stainless.... you have me curious now.

I had no idea. Always oil up everything visible and out the barrels away clean for the year. Just thought one day. I should do a thorough cleaning. Took multiple savage barreled actions odd and was surprised what I saw. So most of my non sentimental/non original classics will get cerskoted from this point forward.

I just removed a Savage Strycker from the safe first time in a few years, pulled the stock off not a speck of rust.
So, I removed a model 10 and took it out of the stock, same thing no rust. I know it isn't safe to ASSUME but I am going to assume all the rest (10) are not rusted. All kept in a safe that is located in the for lack of a better term a boiler room.
