Savage action problem-Help

I am lost. Purchased a new Savage Target Action (sku #18182). Have a new Kreiger barrel. Savage action comes with trigger assembly, trigger guard, recoil lug and jam nut. Savage jam nut screws on barrel perfectly. The barrel is too small and falls inside the action not screwing in at any point. Why is the Savage jam nut (supplied with action) threading perfectly on the barrel yet the barrel is too small in diameter for the action? I am frustrated and just stopped doing anything to ask for help. I am not sure what is right and what is wrong. This action is a right bolt left port standard bolt face. (.308 etc) The bolt is correct. First time I am doing this and need someone to set me straight please.

The fact that the jam nut threads on the barrel and the does not thread on the action is my problem in fewer words. That Savage action is only made in standard bolt face (308 etc.) and .223.

Your problem is you have a small shank barrel but a large shank action.
PTA and LRP actions take the large shank. along with some of the magnum actions.

The Savage Precision Target Action comes with 1 1/8" X 20 tpi that equals 1.125" X 20 tpi.

The Regular 10-110 Style Savage actions come with 1 1/16" x 20tpi that equals 1.0625' x 20 tpi.

Unless Savage made and error, they usually send the barrel nut that matches the action threads.

Suggest you purchase the appropriate diameter and thread for the specific action used.

Savages can be chambered and head-spaced using the nut or with a shoulder like other makes of rifle. The only advantage of the nut is that one barrel can be head-spaced on multiple different rifles. They should always be head-spaced using a SAAMI spec Go and No Go gauge.

Just another note you will find there are a number of pre fit barrels made for Savages. Remember you get what you pay for when ordering pre-fit barrels. There is no disadvantage in using the barrel nut as far as accuracy goes. There are issues to overcome if you wish to use heavier contour barrels, IE: you can not just use a barrel nut wrench on barrels with diameters larger than the nut diameter. Most pre-fit Savage Target barrels are 1.0625" or 1.125" OD the full length of the barrel.
Most of the competitive shooters shooting Savages are using barrels with a 1.250" cylinder diameter either straight or heavy Palma contour.

Good luck

Thanks....but why does the Savage supplied (with action) jam nut thread on this barrel perfectly?

Nat thanks....but I am still lost....From what I gather the barrel is wrong? This jam nut threading on the barrel has me confused. I might add that their supplied recoil lug is 'sloppy' one the barrel and in this case I happened to have a 'custom' recoil lug in stock and that fits perfectly with just clearing the threads on the barrel nicely.

Is it possible that the barrel I bought is NOT for the TARGET SAVAGE ACTION? But rather the 10-110 type? Thats what I understand from your answer. Would the jam nut fit on that wrong barrel because it does. I usually don't loose my patience with these types of problems but I am on the edge with this and I thank you for your time.

Is it possible I have purchased the wrong barrel AND Savage supplied the wrong jam nut with their action? A 2 part problem? The one thing is for sure I am JAMMED UP!

Sounds like you ordered a small shank barrel, but needed the large shank. And got the wrong nut by some strange reason.
Thank you. After reading the answers I received that makes sense to me. The jam nut threading on the barrel threw me a curve. I spent so much time in getting this action (since Feb.) I am close to giving up now. I guess what can correct this would be a large shank barrel and the proper jam nut? It is in 30BR and I was looking forward to this job as it would have been my first one. Between dies, expanders, brass, barrel, action, I have a lot of money tied up in a pile of parts that won't work. I have purchased every single item I needed and the action was so long in coming..............
Thanks again to all who helped.....don't know what the correct next move should be.

just post barrel on here for what you paid and order you the right size barrel. Call Shilen to order one or call Jim Briggs @NSS. He stocks Savage barrels

I have a large shank HV krieger 30BR set up with out a nut that will fit your action, let me know if you need one. Good Luck DG
