Ruger SFAR groups

SFAR owners...
What groups are y'all getting from your SFAR?
Mine is averaging 1.5 - 2.0 MOA with factory and handloads. I can't seem to get any better than that.
If you are getting MOA or less, can you share the ammunition or the handload recipe? Thanks.

Is yours a 16" or 20" ?

My 20" gets 10 shot groups under moa at 200 yds from a bipod prone ( I'm horrible with bipod but I'm trying).

Hornady 155gr bthp and AR Comp. It also loves 175 Matchkings and imr4064.

Make sure the factory gas block doesn't touch the handguard. I replaced mine with a Odin works low profile 20 position gas block.

If the usual suspects are tight,fitted and clearance properly. You are only left with making gas adjustments that will optimize accuracy and still function properly.

Buy some Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr smk factory ammo. If it doesn't shoot sub moa with that stuff then either the rifle or/and the ammo need some work.

I always have a couple of boxes of the FGMM 168smk ammo in case the rifle is not shooting as expected. If the FGMM factory ammo shoots great then I have a problem with my handloads. If the FGMM ammo doesn't group well, then I have a problem with the rifle.

It's a huge time saver that will point you in the direction responsible for the poor accuracy.

Same thing goes for the 223rem FGMM 69smk ammo, and 300winmag FGMM ammo etc.

I ordered a PSA 16" upper and 2-stage lower. I owned a PSA before this one and shouldn't have gotten rid of it. It did, however, have a 20: barrel and was heavy as a brick. I think the 16" is a good option for maneuverability and barrel length for a suppressor.

There's another forum with very detailed info on doing this. Might not be a very economical path however. The Ruger uses a proprietary barrel extension, and would have to be reused. Maybe @USAFRet cut get the bore scoped to see if anything is abnormal there. Maybe some fire lapping could improve things at this point.

I'm sorry to hear that. Obviously there is something going on with the rifle.

I did not know about the barrel extension. When it comes to rifles, I just don't buy Ruger. In my limited experience, they have consistently under performed.

I have to admit; that one was high on my want list. It seems like a very innovative and reasonably priced auto. But the oddball barrel arrangement might be a deal breaker. I'd like to have a 7mm-08 AR...

Do you have a 308 bolt gun as well? Any issues getting good accuracy out of that? Reason I ask is that sometimes lightweight semi-auto carbines are hard to shoot well, especially a light AR-10 - lots of moving BCG mass there with every shot. Reason I ask is a friend of mine (who is an excellent bolt gun shooter!) really struggled with getting good accuracy out of his AR-10. I found it shoot quite well. He was basically shooting it free recoil, which just doesn't work well with his rifle.

Now it sounds like you had been shooting a PSA AR with good results. I assume is a large frame AR, so this is probably a moot point. Have you had anyone else shoot it for you?

Of course it could just be that the barrel sucks and you just need a replacement.

Lastly I have had better results in general with 150-155 gr bullets in light AR-10's. I have had excellent luck with medium burn rate powders like 4064 and 4895 in particular. Lower recoil and less heavily gassed.
