Ruger PC 10MM ?

I have looked at the Ruger PC 40 s&w for a while now and find it interesting but have been holding off because a 10mm with a 15rd mag would work much better for those of us who live in bear country.

So i guess the question is what do you think of the Ruger PC 40s&w and do you use one?

If you go rimmed cartridges, I’d say go back a little further to the Deerslayer (Model 44). Detachable magazines are nice, but more money to shell out. If they come out with another caliber on the PC carbine, I hope they do .45. Can still have their own magazines being utilized, but allow for the Glock option, as well. Plenty of 21/30 magazines out there. And with the velocity of .45, you have a good suppressor host.

FWIW, a while back I watched a show about Alaska Game Officers that regularly had to deal with unruley moose and bears. These people were equipped with .40 caliber Glocks and 12 gauge shotguns. The .40 is a good round that gets a bad rap from gun writers that have nothing else to write about. The biggest complaint from most of the writers seems to be over penetration, deep penetration would be a plus if a bear is the intended target. It's not quite in the same league as the 10MM, but it's real close.

I don’t have a ruger pc carbine but I have had 3 of the cheap highpoint carbines in 9mm and 2 in 40 s&w. I tend to leave them in the tractors and pickups all the time since they are cheap and function reliably. In the carbines I don’t think you need the 10mm. The longer barreled carbines have noticeably more giddy up than the shorter barreled handguns. The 40s pack a good amount of energy. However for bear it’s hard to beat a slug gun I’d think.

I've actually compared 40 in a carbine to a 10mm pistol over a chrono, and a 40 is not a 10 even in that comparison. At best, halfway in between.

As for re-boring a 40 to 10mm, recognize this is a blow-back action and it's not that simple. A blowback action is mainly controlled by bolt weight, and this is a real issue dealing with 10mm. The only truly viable 10mm carbines I've seen are either sub-pistol length gas tube AR variants or delayed unlocking bolt versions.

I would LOVE an affordable 10mm carbine...ones I would trust run $1400...

If you're looking for a bear country PC carbine I second finding one of the Ruger 44s. If you're not in a semi auto platform no reason to stick with 10mm vs moving to bigger rounds. And I say this as a 10mm aficionado. I own a Ruger 44 and love it. Weighs next to nothing. Hits hard. But even with that gas action, you MUST use slow burning powders, rounds loaded with faster burning powders intended for pistols will not cycle as the pressure drops before the gas post.

I love PC carbines but they are a finicky bunch though they will run reliably if you understand what you are doing.

I chronoed a round of federal 40 cal 180 and a round of Armscor 10mm 180 through the Same pistol. 60fps difference.
Underwood Ammo always ran real close to advertised fps.
Hi point makes a 10mm carbine.

Mec -tech makes an AR style upper for your pistol lower. From what I hear they run. Have a glock? just buy the upper and put it on.

Looks a lot like the FEATHER RAV9 I had several years ago. Interesting but not too impressive, or accurate.

Seems they make a 10mm now, among other chamberings.

When you see people that walk around in bear country for a living toting 12 ga. shotguns with slugs in the pipe, it kind of makes the 40 S&W carbine irrelevant. Just a thought...

You did not test real 10mm ammo

With the exception of Underwood, most 10mm factory loads are loaded really weak, barely more than 40SW as you noted. This is not a true representation of 10mm.

I only reload 10mm to full power, because if I didn't I have 40SW guns to shoot...

I get 400fps myself. That armscor must be some puny loads. I shoot 200gr jhp 400fps faster than a 40 with a 180jhp

I see most carrying a glock 20 these days. Thats a lot of firepower with the good stuff loaded in it
