RPR vs. High End Custom

If I shot a .27 MOA group at 250yds with a $900 dollar rifle through $500 glass at a competition on a breezy day, I'd be super proud of that - and rightfully so. The inevitability is that some douchebag would start talking sh@t from their lofty perch with their $6000 dollar rifle under a $3500 scope on top of a $3000 rest with handloads from their $10000 dollars worth of equipment.

Mad props. If this fella sticks it out through all of the hate because he dared to start competing with an RPR or any other factory precision rifle he should be a monster with a custom. Chances of sticking around.... Not good.
I wish I could afford to be a douchebag. Bet I’d be good at it.

To be clear, if your rifle shoots like this consistently, it is an extraordinary factory rifle and that is a great group for a factory rifle.
My only point was that comparing an off the shelf factory rifle with a properly put together custom rifle is like comparing a dog to a cat/apples to oranges/ mustang to a custom race car.
No disagreement. Our league is a friendly informal event with the only rules being the time (length) of the match and a centerfire rifle. Tools range from grand dad's hunting rifle to .30 BR's with Jewel triggers and $1000 front sleds. I typically end up in 2nd place closely behind one of the "high dollar" rigs. I like being the underdog.

I thought I did.

I get it. BR is not the most popular shooting sport so many don't know what we do and what kind of groups we shoot. Probably a good way to describe that is by listing "screamer" groups. These are groups that are recognized as excellent. Sometimes in a match no one shoots a screamer, sometimes several people do. These are the requirements for a NBRSA Screamer Group. IBS is very similar.

Long Range Benchrest:
600-Yards: 5-shot 0.99” – 10-shot 1.99”
1000-Yards: 5-shot 2.99″ – 10-shot 4.99″

Short Range Group:
100-Yards: 5-shot group 0.099” – 10-shot group 0.199”
200-Yards: 5-shot group 0.250” – 10-shot group 0.449”
300-Yards: 5-shot group 0.450” – 10-shot group 0.699″

That’s amazing…thanks for sharing that info.

I am not sure how this got into a benchrest discussion since the 2 rifles mention by the OP are not bench guns and were fired with factory ammo. It should serve to let everyone know the value of learning and putting the effort into crafting quality ammo that has been tuned to your barrel.
Yup. It's not unusual that things get skewed out of context.

Have to remember, really wasn't a test of rifles capabilities . . . but one of factory ammo and since two different level of guns were used, it happens to show the difference between them, which can vary too (like if the test use hand loads tuned to the particular gun).

I think we would be all better served if we started a post with were we are coming from. Such......I am a hunter. Never shot a deer over 200 yds, usually about a 100. I read about pointing bullets. Should I be doing this?. As opposed to saying..... Ok want to shoot far, should I be pointing bullets. I think we all tend to think from our position as if everyone has the same goals we do. Just a thought.

Because some bench rest shooters have to make sure that everyone knows they are more better than everyone else……
They dont have more better they have specific rifle design goals to give them any edge over others playing the same BR arena.

Comparing a RPR to a BR gun is absurd, the BR gun would never win a PRS match. ('_')

The point of this thread started as a contest between a RPR and a custom PRS rifle using factory ammo.
Now the real question should be is there another mass produced factory rifle that will clean a RPR's clock?

I have shot my share of Benchrest Matches at 300 yards, both Group and Score, and if there is indeed a 15+ mph wind as indicated by the OP, then yes, a .270 MOA will not only place high, it just might win it. True, it is 50 yards more, but I have been at many matches where there was a 15+ mph wind where a .270 agg would have won at any yardage.

Of course, the catch is it has to do it 5 times. If the Rifle is capable, it is then up to the shooter.

If the Rifle is not capable, then there is nothing the shooter can do.

I like how shooters always bring up records. Records have little to do with who might be on top in the upcoming match. They are a personal accomplishment by an individuals on one given day. we honor them for that.

It looks like the OP has a fine shooting Ruger.

I wouldn’t say outperform, but definitely tied in accuracy would be the GENII 5R and Bergara HMR. And they win bc they don’t look like a bolt gun, AR, and SCAR got married in Alabama and made some kind of weird, deformed love child. Remember looking cool is what it’s all about.

Well that is complete BS. My point was simply that I wished BR had low cost way for someone to enter and be competitive, like PRS. However, it seems PRS shooters are a bit sensitive about their shooting game........
My experience has been the opposite. Seems BR shooters are very sensitive.

The Surgeon isn't a benchrest rifle!!!

Man... every thread on this board goes down the same obligatory road, which it "ain't gonna compete in benchrest". Blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda

Almost to the point of badgering... borrrring and tired.
Most people are going to comment on what they know, and they may only know one discipline. I added the F Open Shooter on my profile as a disclaimer, I don't shoot BR Groups, physically know better than to try PRS so I do what I know how to do. I learn from everyone, even if I don't use it. What we shouldn't (Edit) do is shame shooters, especially new shooters when they seek advice. I know I am not going to Ben Avery to compete with the Big Dogs, but I can shoot locally and regionally with what I have.
