Rock Chucker Spent Primer Solution

Hi, yes, I still make them - it's a hobby that got jump started 10 or so years ago when the Handloader Magazine published an article about it. Added a few more presses and other reloading related items over the years, but since then, I probably sold around 6000 of the ones for the RC IV/Supreme and many more for all the other RCBS presses...
Send me a PM, if you want to hear more!
Also, if you have a 3D printer, or access to somebody who has one, there are many modified versions of my original design that were made them available for download. Some are junk, others seem to work fine! (thingiverse.com and printables.com are good sources)

I have been looking at the one from primercatcher.com. Since mine is an older Rock chucker 2, most of the ones I find on Fleabay do not work.. but he makes one.

This is what I have. I broke the first one and second but was able to fix 2nd one. Love it and would hate to be without it. UPDATE: PrimerCatcher is replacing the broken one. +1

I got mine years ago for the original RC from Inline Fabrication. Works great.

Agree on getting your own 3D printer - I've been printing doo dads that I never knew I needed! I even hacked my way through FreeCAD and designed a few basic things myself.

I feel your pain. My (much older version) does catch the primers fairly well. But, I didn’t like the dust and debris all over where the press shaft is… so, I de-prime off press… in my garage… keeping the nasty stuff out of my basement… mostly.
For those that hand de-prime and truly want to avoid the mess and if the “Nut Cracker” style ones make your arthritic hand hurt, here is one that I found that works a treat!
I could not initially resist the product that only cost $25 +shipping.
This does the job for multiple cartridges, has a replaceable de-priming pin + the allen key to do the job… I have never had the need to do that but the option is there and this does my small and large primers without having to change anything.
The maker said he just does it as a small sideline and really did not want to be swamped with orders when I asked him why he did not advertise here on the forum..
I have used a Harvey for years but always had to use a TV tray to catch the spent primers and the black grit.
This tool contains the primers and you just dump them out when finished. A true “sit in front of the TV” and not worry about the mess type of tool.

I have one of yours and it works well. Thanks sir.

I added the real thick hook and loop (the hard kind… 2 pieces looped together, one side stuck to primer catcher, other side left sticky cover on) on the back side of mine to space it out from the frame. I lose one occasionally but it improved the catch by 95% I’d say. I’ll send a pic later.

Seems like my word choices here are terrible trying to describe this…. Forgive my ignorance.

Interesting. I do have a Lee hand press for decapping black powder cartridge cases at the range…

But, for 223 I have an old Lee Progressive 1000 set up to decap… it’s a little faster than doing it on a single stage since I just have to load the hopper and work the handle. Keeps the mess off my sizing and seating presses.

After years & many different presses & gadgets this is what I do also. I use a small vacuum under the bench for clean-up. BTW: The Mighty Armory decapping die is the best to buy once. Looks like it's going to last a lifetime!
The spring loaded one? YES! It is great, no double pumping to eject the primer!

Another 3d printer person here. They can be a lot of fun, especially if you like designing your own stuff. They are like a hammer, if you have one you think, 'I can make that'.

But, if you just see a few items on Thingverse, Printables or Makersworld then you can send the file off to one of many 3d print farms.

I had my RCBS press long before my printer so I simply made a primer catcher out of a suitable size plastic container and some glue. I attached it with velcro and it worked great. Of course when I got the printer it was one of the first things I designed.

One of the things Lee did well was primer catchers. Something I expected better from RCBS. Made me wish I had bought the Lee press instead.

Who has the best solution for managing the spent primers from a Rock Chucker? Love the press, but primers going everywhere is pretty aggravating.

Like CDGAYDOS posted, I keep it simple and de-prime off my press and away from my loading bench.
All that abrasive spent primer residue and spooge isn't welcome around my press, dies, bench, etc.
I use a Lee hand press and universal decapping die and I can deprime just about anywhere: back porch/patio, garage, while watching TV.

I have an aftermarket primer catcher on mine that does "ok" and fails to catch about 2 primers out of every 100 pieces of brass. What you can do is get a set-screw and drill a hole in the primer catcher and take two nuts and adjust the stock one for a perfect fit with the ram.

Honestly, I use my Dillon or my Zero press about 98% of the time and use my Rock Chucker for other tasks like swaging, expanding, etc.

I know a lot of guys don't like Lee products for reasons I mostly understand.
Having said that, I do use an older Lee single stage press and the Universal Decapping die for primer removal.
Keeps a lot of nasty stuff out of my other presses and it works fine for that particular purpose. I just leave it in my garage and keep the dirt out of the house.
Just throwing that idea out there.
