Robert Duvall gone

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Duval mid 90’s, at a horse training clinic on his ranch. He had been pointed out to me earlier as the owner. I saw him doing some basic chores any one with horse property would be doing, so walked over to help and thank him for opening up his place for the clinic. Big risk in California at the time. Shared smell talk as we worked and I asked why he wasn’t the one actually participating starting and his own Colt as that was a big part of the focus of the clinic. His reply was that his work contract prohibited certain things, and that was one of them. I then simply asked what kind of B/S company did he work for and what he did for work. He got a real strange look on his face and basically told me he worked in Hollywood and that job paid for his ranch, didn’t need to make money on the horses, so it was trade off he was willing to make. Since the restrictions were only in place while he was under contract.

Probably about the 5th time it was clear to him the had no clue who he was, he just kind of laughed and asked me if I knew who he was. Told him all I knew was the clinician Introduced you as Bob and you are our host for the weekend. At that point I started to get a clue that he might be a little more famous than he was letting on. I told him I hadn’t had a tv in about 15 years and the only movie I’d gone to see recently was the first Indiana jones, that was a few years ago. He asked me if I liked westerns, and that he had a part in Lonesome Dove, I should watch it.

I was able to spend a few minutes everyday talking horses, riding, training, bitching about how Hollywood ruined California, the cost of keeping a sizable horse ranch. Typical stuff.

When I got home my wife asked how the weekend went, told her all about it and the nice owner of the property who was some kind of big deal in Hollywood. Told me to watch Lonesome Dove and I’d see his name in the credits. She asked his name, I said Bob Duvall. You mean Robert? She asked. Could be I said, I was introduced to him as Bob and a couple of the really old guys there were calling him Bobby. Lots of Mr Duvall greetings. She listed off a whole bunch of movies he was in and finally I worked it out.

I ended up sending him a letter through the guy putting on the clinic and actually got a response some months later. Reminded him of who I was and told him I watched Lonesome Dove as he recommended. Enjoyed it and figured out who he was. Thanked him again for sponsoring the horse clinic.

His reply was simple. Thanks for shoveling shit with me, not for me or with expectations. Signed it Bob.

I watched his movies because I kinda knew him. Shared a short trail once. I Think he was the real deal. Good man.

Bob, hope you’re starting your own colts now.

The head army brass at lake city was a lieutenant colonel and we always called him colonel. He didnt gripe about the promotion. Doug
That’s the way they are addressed. In writing it is always Lieutenant Colonel.
If you were calling him Colonel then I assume you were a ‘ full bird’ colonel.
Otherwise it’s ‘Sir’. Or address him in the third person. eg ‘ Would the colonel like a ….’
There is only one rank increase between the two but it is probably the largest step one could make.
Tons of Lt.Col’s not so many full birds.
I just wrote this as a point of interest. I never liked any officers and basically from Major and up I never saw them in the field. Had some nice air conditioned trailers though.
I’m NOT including Warrant Officers.

I really liked him as the crusty Rangemaster in the Tom Cruise movie "Reacher".
He reminded me of my 1st Sgt at the company in Danang in 1971.

Sorry but I don’t put any actors or actresses on a pedestal. Most are too liberal for my liking and all are lying. After all they are trying to convince us they are someone they aren’t right?

Dave.
I used to see Duvall and his wife in Middleburg, Virginia. Most of the time eating in one of the local restaurants. They were a very unassuming couple. He would blend in a crowd of people and you would have no idea who he was. To me, it looked like he didn't want to be known to anyone.

Robert Duvall was related to Robert E. Lee. Had a good shooting that was also related to Lee. (Robert Lee ****) Small world when you think about it.

Hackman and Duvall passing away so close together. There were certain actors that you could pretty much be rest assured they would make a good movie.

Duvall and Hackman were similar in that they ran the gamut on the types of movies that did. From action, drama and comedy and they were great in all of them.
