Robert Duvall gone

While he had many great performances, his role in Lonesome Dove was the greatest performance I ever watched on screen. Why he didn't win an Emmy for that performance I'll never understand but there is a lot I do not understand in today mixed-up / upside down world.

I read that he became the character he played. I also read that he did not allow directors to control how he played a character. He once had a friend go wih him for days visiting places in Texas. His friend asked what they were looking for and he anwered “an accent”.
And I met a blacksmith who worked on the horses for Gods and Generals. He said he would sit and talk with him about horses over a beer sometimes.

And lets not forget Last Tango where he was an assasin who delivered flowers to his target, then pressed a North American Arms mini revolver to his target’s heart and fired.

IMHO, along with Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot, born to the western genre of film. How could anyone not be a Robert Duvall fan ? A great one has passed.

My close friend Sam Bottoms (we grew up together in Santa Barbara) worked with Duvall in the famous VN war movie, Apocalypse Now. Sam told me Duvall was highly intelligent, very dedicated, and extremely professional. Sadly Sam passed away in 2008 from a brain tumor. His doctor believed the tumor might have been related to chemical exposures during the filming of this movie.

Wonder if anyone ever thought that the SP1 Robert was holding would become a collectors item and that they would be outlawed in California and Washington.

P.S. had one that was my fathers. Passed it on to my nephew a couple of years ago. He still has it.
