RL26 & 6x47L

I've seen some good info on RL26 in the 6CompMatch by Chad Dixon and the 6.5Gap 4s by George Gardner. Has anyone worked with RL26 in the 6L?

Not enough case capacity, doubt it would work in 6.5 creed either.
Agree with the first part. I've tried it and you reach max case capacity before achieving any significant velocity gains. But I have played with it a little more in a 260 w/130 Bergers and had some success. At max capacity, I am picking up about 100 fps compared to my H4350 load, and QL shows lower pressure. The accuracy with RL26 isn't quite as good as with H4350, but close enough for me (PRS). I think it would be worth giving a shot in a 6.5CM.

Interesting. I shoot 136 scenars at 2780 fps with 42.8g of H4350 in an 26" barrel.

What are you getting from the 130's and RL26? Thanks.

RL 23 will work in a 6.5 creed, I've never read where a powder as slow as H4831 has done anyone any good in the creed, slowing down to RL26 seems a waste of time to me.
Really can't compare case capacity of a 260 to the creed neither.

Case capacity on a 260 and 6.5 CM are almost identical. I wouldn't have guessed a slow powder would give these results either, but QL threw it out as an option, and I gave it a shot. I'm getting 2930 fps w/H350, and 3060 fps w/RL26. The design of the RL26 kernels give you a more efficient case fill, so you can get more in than you think.

The OP asked about 6x47L anyway, not sure how we got on the 6.5CM??

There was a rabbit hole that needed checked out, lol

I'm following closely. My barreled action will not be here till next week: 26" Rock Creek in a Marksman contour in front of a TL3. Some have thought that RL26 is actually a faster powder than RL25 simply because of the granular diffences as FTRinPA mentioned. Whether or not it is worth pursuing in load development in the 6x47, I thought I'd run up the flag pole. I'm essentially looking for 3080fps with single digit SD's. Probably H4350 will be the load; but I'll at least give RL26 a look since I've already got it form my 6.5SAUM. Chad Dixon with LRI has really pushed the powder with the 6 CompMatch, but obviously that has more case capacity than the Lapua. However, I do know that there are others wondering about it for the Lapua.

Correct, In published reports, RL26 has a higher density. This increases the packing fraction. Add it's flow coated burn inhibitor to lower initial burn rate, makes for a great powder for lower operating pressures with longer burn out time down the barrel.

Just wanted to add a plug for RL26 in the .243win. I'm pushing 105gr Berger hybrids at 3035fps out of a 26in 1:7.7 twist barrel. No pressure on the brass, and I'm well below max load. Win brass, win WLR primer. 5 shots .4MOA (outside diameter of group) consistently.

Did you see a bit of smoke burn out the barrel like a black powder rifle?

Did some testing with the 115s in a 26" 1-7.5 twist that had ~1100 rds on it IIRC. Used an older barrel because othewise you can't get enough powder into the case to make it worthwhile. This was at 400 yards.

This is 5 shots of 45.0 gr. RL-26 with a 105 Hybrid when I was breaking in the barrel:

Velocity was 3201 fps. And yes, that IS 45.0 gr. in a 6x47L. It's a fine powder and you can pack a ton of it into the case.

RL-23 was a bit more consistent. I ended up buying 8 lbs of it to shoot with the DTAC, but was finishing off my 105 Hybrid supply before moving onto that. Also at 400 yards.

I tried RL-19 when working up 105gr loads in my 6x47L and velocity dropped 100fps below RL-17 load. And RL-17 is much closer in burn rate to RL-15 than it is to RL-19, so I can't imagine using RL-26.

Why does everyone feel like RL 26 is some magical powder, I bought 30lbs of it when it first came out, wasn't for me.

It is a "magical" powder due to its innovative chemistry, but only when used in an appropriate application. That would mean a case considerably larger than X47L or XC.

Haha, I bought 30lbs of it when it first came out, it was so magical that when exposed to air a few times my 7 saum gained 100fps from when new, I hope they got that ironed out.
After conferring with someone from Aliiant, I came to the conclusion getting a honest answer on a powder complaint would be the equivalent of getting a honest response from Hillary.
