RL17 in a 6.5x55Swe.

Hi All.
I've got my hands on several tubs of RL17 and looking at using Nosler AB 130gr bullets.
Has anyone used this combo before?
My rifle is a Mauser M12 20" bbl.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hodgdonreloading.com shows 40g starting w/ 45.5 max for Hornady 129gr. bullet and H4350 which has a very similar burn rate as Re17. Start low and work up. Shows a max velocity of 2700 fps. If you go to the Alliant Reloading site they may or may not have similar info but I have found them to be very conservative.
Know that Reloader 17 is a high intensity powder and will burn out your throat more quickly than other 4350-speed powders.

Go onto the UK Reload Swiss website, Load Data section and select 6.5X55 SE.

http://www.propellants.co.uk/reload-swiss-load-data.html

and use RS60 data. Reload Swiss RS60 and Alliant Re17 are one and the same thing sold in different markets under different brand and product names.

The nearest bullet to the Nosler 130 AB is the 130gn Norma HPBT Match shown as 'DL' which I take as being Norma's 'Diamond Line', factory moly-coated and carnuba wax tumbled bullets. So, normal prudence aside, reduce the Reload Swiss maximum to take that into account.

QuickLOAD also suggests 45gn is about maximum with the 130 AB for 2,745 fps in a 20-inch barrel, but ......

1) QL has IME a nasty habit of underestimating pressures and MVs from the Nitrochemie 'EI' grades, of which Alliant Re17 is one, and

2) the new Nosler #9 manual shows 39.0-43.0gn Re17 for its 129/130gn models, 43gn producing 2,822 fps. (Nosler case, Rem 9 1/2 primer, bullet seated to 3.025" COAL, 23-inch Lilja test barrel.)

No, I don't shoot the Nosler AccuBonds.

However I do shoot two very similar 130 gr. bullets in my 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser cartridge but in a modern action such as you do.

Hodgdon's loads are based on the 45,000 CUP pressure so as not to cause pressure excursions in the very old Mauser M94/96 rifles. These have no bearing on this cartridge when fired in a modern action.

Your rifle is a hunting rifle not a target rifle so shots are fewer and further between, allowing the use of higher energy powders without the annoying results from more rapid fire scenarios.

The real limiting factor is the barrel length, however it is what it is.

Thank you guys. I've had a look at those and will proceed with a bit of caution.
Interesting observation about QL pressure and MV Laurie.
