RL16 & the 6 Creedmoor

In looking for the next higher node today I shot a ladder consisting of 41.8, 42, 42.2, 42.5 and 42.7 RL16 with 105 Hybrids. The first three loads all went in one hole at 300 yards. 42.5 jumped out of the node a bit and 42.7 was not only farther out but the primer was starting to show some flattening. My COAL measured 2.800" with bullets I trimmed meplats with my Giraud and pointed with a Hoover system. I had six rounds additional loaded at 42 grains and all six of those shot a group just under 1.5" at 385 yards. My distance from 100 yard zero was 1.2 mils at the 385 yard mark. Forgot to take the #$*@ chrono so still no velocity data.

No velocity data yet. Sorry.
Barrel is a Bartlein 5R with 7.5 twist finished at 26". I got sidetracked by my latest project; a new Tikka T3XTAC A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor. Already have two other 6.5Creedmoor rifles but just had to have one more.

I finally got the opportunity to shoot the RL16 loads out to 1,000 Yards and I am very pleased with the outcome. My load was 42 grains RL16 with Berger 105 Hybrids. In practice on Friday I was able to find zero easily at 600, 800, 900 and 1,000. The conditions were switching winds with high humidity and ambient temps in the low 90's. I incurred no pressure issues, easy bolt lift and solid performance at each distance. Saturday's match brought difficult conditions. Humidity 96%, temps in the mid/upper 80's, switchy winds and periodic light rain were all present when I shot my relay. I was happy to see I was able to duplicate the performance from Friday. At 1,000 yards my first shot was just a little left so I mad the correction and fired four more. They fell into roughly 4" on the steel. I think I'm going to stick with RL16 in the 6 Creedmoor for a while.

I shot a 3x1000 F match today with the 110 SMK's and RL16. The load held up well. We have our own class, F Tactical which I shot. I came in first by 27 points over 2nd and would have placed 3rd in F Open. So I have no complaints about RL16 or the 110 SMK's :)
Congrats on your placing at the match! What Twist does your rifle have?

Ahhhh! Don't tell anyone how good RL16 is or it'll become as hard to find as H4350 (ha ha)

I tried 41.0 grns RL16 in reformed Lapua cases, 2.8" OAL, in my Factory RPR 6mm Creed. I immediately got sticky bolt lift and hard extraction, cratered Fed 210M primers. The factory Hornady loads were crono'ed @ 2951fps average, and my handload averaged 3133fps average for three shots. WOW! Why so much pressure and speed difference? I ended up pulling all the other loads I was going to try. Now I will be starting at 39.0grns and going up. Is anyone else finding that their rifle doesn't tolerate milder loads?

I cannot speak for using reformed Lapua brass or anyone else's rifle.
A couple of weeks ago I got up to my 1250 place to shoot some 6 Creedmoor at longer ranges. I shot both 105 Hybirds and 110 SMK ahead of the same 42 grains RL16. It was 6.7 mils up from 100 yard zero at 1,000 with 105 and 6.6 mils with the 110. I saw no pressure from either load and accuracy was very good.

If you are going to use RL 16, I'd highly recommend you buy enough of one lot# for each barrel you plan to use it in. I like it in 6 creed and 6XC, but subsequent lot#'s yield way different results.

Is it likely that the lot of powder I have is slightly faster burning than most other lots?

So is RL16 still a prefferred powder for the 6 Creed? If so, what load are you using? Is it living up to it's temp insensitivity and copper fouling resistance?

I just finished up load development on my 6mmXC with the 110SMK and reloader 16.

26" Proof 7 twist
Nosler brass
CCI #200s
40.0gr R-16
10 shot average velocity of 3070fps SD of 4

I'm looking forward to trying out my new 6mm Creedmoor with RL-16 and Peterson SR brass very soon. Still waiting for the Lapua SR 6mm Creedmoor to come out on the shelf's around October.

Here is some plotted velocity with 6CM and Alliant powders. Some 107 and 110 SMK numbers, R16 and R23 powder, all in Alpha brass. You'll also see that some is on a new barrel, some is after break-in, which we found fun. https://www.facebook.com/teamarea41...380763854099/2452740958084737/?type=3&theater

Any update with the Peterson brass and 16?
