rings around my cases

Got a savage 12 FV .223 a little bit ago and some Lapua 69 gr ammo for it. Didn't notice it til 2nd range trip but my gun is leaving rings around the cases. It did it to the cheap winchester ammo too. I can't get a very good pic of it, but towards bottom of case is like 6-7 very light rings i can BARELY feel, and a heavier one towards middle of case, but it doesn't over lap itself. I can feel that with my fingernail. I checked my cases and the very first round out of the gun has it too. Any ideas what it could be? Can i still use the Lapua brass to reload?

Flaw in the chamber, such as a metal chip getting stuck in the reamer while being chambered?????

Get a Smith to look at the chamber...

I agree with what Phil said. Either have a gunsmith look at it to verify or call Savage and let them know, they will most likely ask you to return the gun to them for inspection.

It is caused by a rough reamer - it can be polished out by a 'smith that knows what he is doing. Polishing the chamber will not hurt anything.

I put a final mirror polish on all of my chambers, whether I cut it, or bought it.

Alright thanks for the responses guys. I did wire brush it a little, and I'll see if it did anything. Will the cases I have fired already still be ok or will I need new cases to load with?

Pretty sure a "mirror polish finish" is not a good idea as far as rifle chambers go.

I have "0" problems with a mirror finish in chambers... but I have had case problems with rough chambers - so I choose the "0" problems pathway. Been working on guns since forever.

If rough chambers were a good thing, then all the "high end" and custom rifles would have them...

Stroked, if you reload I would load a few cases and fire them 2-3 times and see if and extraction problem starts. If not continue to shoot with the chamber as is. If extraction begins to become difficult clean it up some. You will find many different opinions on the chamber being completely smooth as a baby's bottom, or a little scuffed for grip.

Correct me if i am wrong but if the rifle was purchased recently it should be under factory warranty. That being said why wouldn't the owner want to send it back to the manufacturer so that they could correct the flaw and provide him with a rifle that is correct and won't scar up his brass?

I just got done waiting for my 700 to come back from recall so I don't feel like waiting yet again on a rifle. I bought it from a guy who bought it new, but no idea when, and he never fired it. So yes, it's new, but I don't know his purchase date. I have an experienced smith i can take it to, and would rather take it to vs sending it back. But typically, I like the warranty route so i keep the warranty.

Thank you for the response. I figured I'd keep and eye on things and go from there. Worst case I'll take it to my smith. First range trip I had 7 shots in an ~inch, 4 of them under half inch.

I noticed the same thing on some of my brass. I quit worrying about it last week when I opened up two new boxes of Lapua and prepped them for a new gun. The new brass had the same rings.

Glad to hear it'll work out still. I questioned it mostly because I noticed it on the Winchester too so I knew it had to be my rifle.

I have a savage 7mm-08 the same way , I wasn't in to reloading yet , a friend of mine relaoded some form me and we thought it was the new die set. But it was in the chamber I took the barrel off , with a rubber grit and drimmel tool cleared that spot on the chamber , he reinstalled my barrel and now all seams good . Still loading those marked cases after 7/8 rounds , new cases come out unmarked and no new/other marks on old cases.
