rings around my cases

So I finally got set up to reload, did 15 cases though my bump die, loaded the powder up, and went to seat bullet... but the sleeve wouldn't go all the way down the case. I eased it with the arbor press thinking maybe it was just snug. Nope, it got stuck. I got it out though and checked the other cases, Lapua and Winchester. Where I was getting snug at was in the area where those rings are. I measured them vs range brass I use for dummies that were not fired from my rifle. I ran them though the bump die and they slid right in the seater. So I just sent savage and email to confirm I'm still in warranty. I now have 50 lapua, 20 Winchester and 20 hornady cases that are all useless. I'm going to borrow a buddy's full length size die and see if that does anything at all, but that still isn't fixing the problem plus working the brass every time I reload. I went from excited to bummed real quick tonight :(

I have a 300wsm that has a really noticeable ring about half way up the body. I worried about it for a while and I could feel it going into the die. The gun shoots so good with any and every load I have ever put through it that can't bring myself to self it back to my gun smithing to have him fix it. If it shot poorly or ruined brass after the first or second firing I might have considered getting it fixed but so far so good. I would say a fl die should be able to smooth it out but if savage will fix it and it doesn't shoot incredibly good I would send it back and shoot something else till it got back

I had a gunsmith friend chamber an A/R barrel for me in .20 Practical and my fired brass has a noticeable ring about half way up the case from a chip or nicked reamer. I use short-based die for sizing and have had no noticeable issues either with sizing or brass life (I go for around 7 loadings and toss). I just live with it as the Hart barrel is a real shooter and I will wear the barrel out eventually anyway. If it were a new factory gun - I'd send that sucker back if having sizing issues.

You keep up the good work now, you hear?

I know I am a bit twisted humor wise and the older I get the more prominent it seems to become but I found this worthy of a 'fat boy chuckle'! :)

Every smith in these parts I know does not polish. Mine get 320 grit max and I have had absolutely no problems with that. A couple times when feeling cocky, arrogant and narcissistic I grabbed the 400 grit and hit the chamber with it like I used to do to a cheap hooker. While nothing really really bad happened with either I still feel shamed at times! :)

Have always heard and read that 'mirror' polishing allows more thrust on the boltface because the sides of the case cannot grab to help absorb some of the rearward pressure. Makes sense to this backwards in the middle of nowhere Dakota misfit!
