Ring on Primer

Loading for my 6.5 PRC. 52.0 gr IRM 7828 and 55.5 gr H1000, bullet is Hornady 140 gr BTHP. Hornady reload info says I can go up to 55.1gr of 7828 and 59.0gr of H1000 so I shouldn’t be getting and pressure problems yet but not sure what is causing the ring around the firing pin mark on the primer. Action is a Remington 700, bolt is a PTG with standard firing pin diameter and sako extractor. What is causing this ring?

Your firing pin is not fit to the hole- too much extra room. Youre not over pressure. You can get that bushed thru carlsbad and eliminate that issue so you can bump it on up
I was wondering about that and double checked to make sure I didn’t get a small firing pin with a standard hole in the bolt. Just looks like high pressure but shouldn’t be with the amount of powder I am using. They are both PTG and both standard size. What is meant by bushed thru Carlsbad?

Not brushed, but bushed. The firing pin hole in the bolt has a bushing installed as you currently have too much clearance between the firing pin and the bolt. I don't have any experience with a PTG bolt but for what they cost I would expect them to have the correct tolerance between the pin and the bolt. Carlsbad will also change the pin diameter to .062".

Dusty,
I understand the cause, fix and the fact that it is not over pressure. Can you please expand on how they fix this and what would be the down side if you did not fix it and continue to bump up? Thank yo Sir!

Back to the fact that this is a PTG bolt. I was considering buying one recently and had a well known gunsmith tell me that if I used one of his firing pins with it I would need to send him the bolt so he could fit the pin to it for proper clearance. Seeing the OP's primers brings into focus why the gunsmith wanted the bolt in his shop.

Ok got it thanks! I went back and double checked my order. Both the bolt and firing pin were ordered to be .075”. They were ordered together. I took the bolt apart and measured the firing pin with a micrometer and got .0740”. I don’t have a good way to measure the hole in the bolt. I have an extra factory Remington 700 firing pin and it measures .0748” and it does fit in the hole of the bolt face. Wouldn’t swapping firing pins out do the same thing as having the bolt bushed? Cheaper and easier in my situation. Thanks!!!

Will if it fits perfectly. I'm curious if you bought the PTG bolt and pin combo new from them? I would be disappointed with paying for a custom product and receiving sloppy workmanship.

Yes I ordered them together. Did some more measuring on the PTG pin and it measures different in spots like it is out of round. Gun has less than 20 rounds through it.

If it were me I would contact Dave Kiff the owner of PTG. They need to make things right for you. Sure glad I decided against buying one if that is their standard fit on a firing pin to bolt. Carlsbad can make it perfect and the cratering of the primers goes away. I just don't think that you should have to pony up the $$ to have a custom made bolt altered.

I would contact PTG should not have that problem with there bolt and firing pin you see this a lot on the later model 700 from the factory .

The general appearance except for the minor raised ring looks to be normal safe pressures. I see no harm being done by increasing the load. The ring might not change but shooter will see increased velocity and maybe better accuracy. The raised ring condition may even dissapear. Many of my rifles leave primers looking much the same. We throw the fired primers away.

Did you reset the headspace when you replaced the OEM bolt with the PTG bolt? If not, it could be that your chamber is now too short...
