ring around the ogive

I'm using a Forster Ultra Seating die for the 6.5-284. I've noticed that I'm getting 'ring around the ogive'. After seating, there is a noticeable ring where the seating plug encounters the bullet. I think I can feel a bit of a depression there as well. It appears consistent around the bullet,i.e. not just on one side). Any thoughts what might be causing this? I am using Berger 140 gr Match Target VLDs and new Lapua brass.

Ross

you have to much neck tension i was having the same problem went to a bushing FL die and it went away..

The seater, and I have the same one) has a cone that the bullet fits up in, to center it in the dies chamber, and push it down in to the case. They cant make this cone fit all bullets perfectly, in my 6BR with 80g Berger's, unless the cone is clean they stick, like in a morse taper. If this ring bothers you, you can send the die and a bullet back to Forester and they will make a special cone for that bullet at a minimum of cost.
Mike.

I agree with MikeM. I was loading some A-max and kept getting a ring around the meplat. The plastic tip on the A-max was hitting before the ogive was and giving me that ring. I had the die modified and it works fine now.

Thanks for the input fellas!

It bothers me only if it will significantly impact accuracy. What do you think, mostly cosmetic or will accuracy suffer?

My guess is part of it may be that the new Lapua brass has tighter necks than what I'll have after the first firing and neck sizing with the bushing die.

Don't worry about the dreaded ogive ring causing you any accuracy problems, because it won't cause you any. Don't put a mark on the heel though or all bets are off........

OK. I won;t worry about 'ring around the ogive' affecting accuracy. I thought I knew most of the vocabulary regarding bullet parts; I'm not familiar with the 'heel'. How about a definition.

Ross

Nope not the bearing surface, thats not a problem if its scratched.
The heel is the very bottom of the bullet and it's critical to accuracy.
Squeeze the tip of a bullet and it will go into the group, scratch the heel and
you'll think your rifle quit shooting.......
