onelongshot have you ever shot one of the ultra light arms rifles, they are hard to shoot accuratley.
I know of a few people to get rid of them because they could not shoot them well.
My buddy had one in a .270 and the recoil from that light of a rifle if you are not disciplined to shoot it can cause some misses.They can be hard to shoot well...But they do shoot..I knew another guy who had one in a 300 win mag and could not get it to shoot and melvin came out and shot it,cutting bullet holes..I'm just telling you what i have seen..I say work out and carry a heaver rifle.lol...

My .300wm weighs 10.7 lbs. not including bipod, sling or bullets. The day I can't pack it in the hills anymore I will loose 10.7 lbs off my mid section and keep on truckin

My brother owns several ultra lights and swears by them; he and Melvin are on a first name basis. Last night we decided to use our doe tags and were asked to hunt by an acquaintance to hunt his property. In his words, they are overrun by deer.

I decided to use by brother's 260, built by Melvin. When the deer came out they came in two and three at a time. From where we position ourselves the shots ranged from 270 -300 yards. I was able to drop two in quick succession with two shots.

I think a lot to accurate shooting is finding a gun that fits well and feels balanced for you; it becomes an extension of you. For me, length of pull is critical, 13 1/4 makes for a perfect fit. In addition to fit, caliber and recoil are critical. My brother is deadly with his 270 Win short mag., I've seen him take four hundred and five hundred yard shots I could never duplicate but with the exact same rifle in 300 win short mag it's another story altogether. He admits that he does not care for the recoil and it seriously affects his ability to keep it on paper.

In summary, I think Melvin's rifles are tack drivers. I think that part of the problem with some not shooting ultralights properly might be people ordering stock dimensions without trying them or ordering calibers in an ultralight that they simply are not comfortable shooting.

You are correct; the Husqvarna 8000 action to be precise. A source tells me that they are in fact outstanding actions, accurate, and made with one of the hardest steels he has ever come across.

I bought a rifle from a gunsmith friend of mine it was a 7mm rem mag on a Husqvarna action I had him rebarrel it in .264 win mag in a select match Shilen barrel, it never shot right, a few years later I met another smith and we quickly became friends as a matter of a fact he got me into 1K br anyway I gave him the husqvarna to see what he could do for me, he squared it all up and it shoots great now, however he said it was the hardest action he had ever worked on.

as a 6-284 owner, get a longer barrel! 24 inches cannot give you the superb performance in this cartridge. 28 or even 30 inches allows this gun to SHOOT! when this cartridge first appeared the "experts" didn't give it much hope. this was probably somewhat true since there weren't a lot of slow powders then as there are now. with heavy bullets(105s) this cartridge can achieve 3350+ fps using rel22, rel25, h1000 and more. 4 extra inches can get you the extra speed and since this cartridge is considered "long range", speed and high bc are a must have. throat erosion is an issue which is another reason for a longer barrel in that you can have it set back 4 inches when that time arrives and you have what you are planning right now. around 1000 rounds is an estimate, perhaps less if you shoot hot and often. oh yea, on a budget, you can't go wrong with a trued rem700 action...the older, the better.

He is looking for a 6.5-284 not a 6-284. I have built and shot quite a number of the latter and a friend of mine that has a gunstore has built over 75 of the 6.5-284s. He told me that he finds 25" to be the perfect length between velocity and portability. I build mine to 25" as well.

Not sure why you came up with such an obscure action but it will probably work fine as long as there is a follower/mag box that will work ok. I have used long action remington with 30-06 follower and box with good results myself.

My custom actions don't shoot appreciably better than my Remingtons on sporter weight barreled rifles. I think they give you good bragging rights but you can certainly build a nice gun on a $400-$500 action.

I prefer the 8.5 twist to all others. It will stabilize any bullet I have found and lets you push the 130s just a little faster. I feel like it adds about 50-75 fps to my accuracy node. I currently have a 9 twist, 8 and 8.5". Since I mostly hunt with 130s, I don't think I am hurt too much by any of the three but the 9 twist will not shoot the 140 VLDs and won't shoot the 130s at sea level.

EDIT: I responded before reading all the way to the bottom. I wouldn't want a 270 WSM in a 5# rifle! I have owned a 257AI in ULA and have shot a 30-06. I thought the 3006 was a little more recoil than I liked and I shoot an 8# 340 Wby! I wish I had another NULA but they are not as easy to shoot as a heavier rifle.
