Richards microfit??

I have been looking for a new stock for a while and I have looked at two as being the front runner as sort of a do all stock. I have looked at the Richards microfit stocks, looking into the benchmark and other target style stocks, how do they compare to say a stock savage take off vlp stock? Also, to those who gave used Richards microfit stocks, how much time should I expect to take to finish one?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

I have done dozens , that being said ,it was part of my job . They ,along with Bishop, Fajen , and a few more long gone companies made nice stocks , meant for the professional or the fathers or grandfathers of our current generation .
What I'm trying to say is , unless you have GOOD woodworking skills or have smith ( that also needs skills ) it will be a daunting task to finish correctly .
They are rough finished using the router than a file , maybe some 36 grit paper on a disc . That's the way you will receive it . It's not just pop in and sand . It's not a job for a guy with a Dremel and a finish sander . Some real stock making tools are needed , a good set of chisels , wood rasps , Inletting black ,etc.
The wait time on the non highlight actions is about what they say 6-8 weeks , ordering one that is in yellow as taking extra time and money for set up and the wait could be longer than stated .
They are great as far as service , a little optimistic on grading walnut but if you get laminate it good to go . Usually enough wood to suit anyone's taste . Pm me for more , it's coffe time!

Have had one stock from Richards...for a 98 mauser sporter... the action fit was good... like Ggmac says...you will need lots of time and tons on sand paper as there will be plenty wood to work with...Neil

I have had a couple Micro Fit stocks over the years and I can agree that they are nice but do require a lot of work and patience. Here is one my brother just finished up for his Mauser build; there was quite a bit of inletting needed around the trigger guard area as well as in the action inlet area. To say these stocks arrive rough is an understatement and quite a bit of work was done to shape up and thin down the palm swell and forend. This stock took him about month to finish to his liking and has about 35 coats of finish and buffed out to a satin finish with FFF pumice and Rottenstone. Turned out really nice but it sure took some work.

I ordered two stocks from Richards, both looked more like clubs than gun stocks. I suggested to them I thought I could train woodpeckers to do a better job.

I've had at least a dozen or so over the years and am looking at another one (maybe) in the near future. For what you pay for them and the selection of styles, they're a deal.
I've recieved them looking like they were cut with an axe and others that took very little work to fit and finish. PATIENCE will be your friend if you choose to get one. Either you'll love it or hate it.
I happen to love every one of the stocks I recieved.
Action fit has been real good. Very little work and no special tools required, just patience. What ever you do to the stock will make it YOURS. It IS worth the effort.

Thanks for the replies everyone! You have all confirmed what I have heard, and hopefully you are all happy with your stocks. I have been thinking of the prone style or precision style. Does anyone have any pictures of those? Or any pictures ofRichards microfilm would be awesome! As far as word working skills, my stepdad has been in the custom cabinet making business for 30 years, and over the years he has taught me skills. I appreciate all the help, and keep the informationext coming.

Thanks,
Ryan

I feel my time is worth way more than it takes to finish a Richards. You may also have to wait a long time for the club.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nuff said!

I recieved a thumbhole cheek piece benchrest style about two weeks ago. So far, i have 15 hours into it. The inletting was a little shallow. There could have been a little more wood behind the bolt handle. Also got the decelerator pad on it. I think its glued on. If you have some woodworking skills and a lot of free time they are worth the money. I am waiting on pillars so i can bed it and do the final shaping. This stock is for a single shot savage. That being said, i ordered two more for a couple remingtons. I have a composite f class stock on order with no time frame for a finished product. I want it so i will wait. Im figuring it will take me 50-60 hours to go from laminated club to finished stock. These will be for ftr and f class. All 3 are thumbhole. Hunting stocks might be less "clubby".

How about Boyd's stocks? Are they hunting only stuff and not upto competition standards?
Also wondering why there's so much price difference between Boyd/Richards ($100-$200)and competition style stocks($600-$800)?

Fit finish and style . The laminates are most likely the same . Look the same but not sure since the fire at Rutland .
