Reputable Gunsmiths

I received my proof print on the reamer/go-gauge from JGS, and all is a go there. Jasmine, at JGS is a pleasure to work with. Now the waiting begins. Still waiting on one of the three barrel manufacturers I want to get 6mm barrels in my twist and contour back in stock for purchase. Still no takers on a gunsmith to do the work though. . .either they're covered up in work, not interested, or just do not check their answering machines or emails. So I'm still on the hunt!!!

Not trying to be to flippant about your project, but most shooters that dive into something this involved usually do their own work or at the very least have a good friend that can.

I can sympathize with your frustration in not being able to find a person to tackle this. We live in a litigious world, leading many with the attitude of….”I would rather not get involved.

You might want to double check me but in one of your earlier posts you mentioned sending fired rounds to Whidden for dies. I believe they stopped doing that some time ago so they could just focus on making more “standard” dies.

If that’s the case it doesn’t leave you with many options, Warner tool and die would be the next one I would recommend but with the passing of Alan I don’t know where that leaves them as far as taking on work right now.

You may want to consider having JGS make you a resize reamer at the same time?

Good luck!

I totally agree with this. Years ago I had a friend with a very elaborate shop that I could work in, unfortunately when he passed away his children sold off everything he had, and that was the last time I was able to do such "ideas". so now I have to outsource.

It has been a while since I have had dies made as well. . .but thank you for the heads-up. I will check into this, but there are several very well crafted folks out there that can make this happen.

Have you checked with Dave Tooley.

I have not checked with Mr. Tooley. I did talk with Alex Wheeler again!!! I sent my reamer print to him and a case web measurement he asked for. He made a couple corrections to the print and it looks like things are a GO!!! That made my day. Now to get a few more items in hand and down to him. Thank you all for the recommendations and contact info. It will be some time to come, but I will update this post as things progress. Stay tuned. . . . .

I can't find a smith I trust in Alabama. All the good trustworthy smiths across the country are to busy to take more work. Only smith I've used for serious stuff was Speedy. Excellent work, but he's in TX and I moved to Alabama.

Danley Precision. Don’t know if he is taking new work. He’s located in central Alabama. None better . On the other hand, Mail and ups are only a couple of days away from anywhere.

I was in a gunshop this morning and scored 2 pounds of both Alliant 15.5 and H4350. The H4350 may be a little on the slow side for my case, but I will be shooting 105 to 110 grain bullets. . .so it will be on the fence. I'm thinking this new little whiz-bang is going to rest somewhere between the 6GT and 6XC in powder charge.

But the best part of my outing was I got to fondle a Seekins Hunter chassis while I was there!!! I have been eyeball'n one of these for a good while, it was on a Seekins Element Hunter in 6.5PRC. This felt very nice in my hands and the folding stock locked in and out perfectly. . .no play or wiggle, a very solid stock!!! And with the #5 contour barrel I'm using there will be only about a 1/8th inch area of free float around the barrel. This was something that crossed my mind with the chassis systems out these days, I didn't want a huge gap around the barrel. Now I have to save some more pennies and get one on order. Gotta love it!!!
