Repaired A Vintage 18” Crescent Wrench

I have a small wood carpenters plane. My grandfather made the wood body and my great grandfather (grandfather's father-in-law) a blacksmith, made the bit. My father used it as a young boy to make dowel pins for 6 panel doors in Holland. He also learned how to make wagon wheels. He could "run" a lathe, his part was to operate the treadle to make the lathe turn.

That is so neat, I have some Diamond Calk, but no box end on it, Proto, Challenger, Blackhawk, S_K, Bonney, and many others.

I have some old PLVMB also. Stamped as usual except not really finished that great and no plating. Stamped "WF" which I later found out stood for 'war finish'. Obviously a cost cutting and material savings during WWII
The above is somewhat questionable but then again the whole history of the company is filled with trademark etc., problems. Doesn't matter as the tools were good ones.
Have quite a few Lectrolite also.

So the story goes sump thin like this.

A millwright rings the buzzer at the door of the tool cage, and the check-out guy asks "whaddaya need?"

Millwright says, "A pretty good sized crescent wrench."

Check-out asks, "18 inch -- 20 inch??"

Millwright says, "Doesn't really matter. I'm using it for a hammer.";) jd

This big Crescent Wrench has been in our family since I was a kid. My Dad had it at the Mobile Dry Docks before he was drafted in WW-2.

We used it at our Shop for years. Some years back, someone put too big of a cheater pipe on it and cracked the adjusting scroll.

It hung in the wall in our tool room for years, so last week I decided to fix it by machining a new scroll and pin.

I used piece of 4340 at 38 RC. The thread is 3 3/4 tpi Buttress cut deep.

Anyway, I’m taking it home and hanging it on my shop wall. It deserves a good retirement.View attachment 1264554
These were my grandfathers I don’t know how old they are but I’ve been holding onto them for 40 years nowEFB2FE68-053C-4419-9DE6-D7A5D391BAC5.jpeg7464AB03-1009-4C69-8664-E4B72ADB2664.jpeg

These were around long before China got into the making of tools, for sale in the USA. Some are from the 30-40''s. and maybe earlier.
Chinese Nut Rounder is what my dad called them in the mid-late 50's before not much other than Chinese food was prevalent in the US. No idea where he picked the term up.
