Removing barrel — how to protect

suggestions here:

I've used the barrel vise jaw inserts from Brownells. I've used them to install/remove remage barrels with rosin.
From what I've heard about some factory barrels, not sure they would hold tight for removing some of them.

Rosin/alcohol slurry and a sticky note. Apply with a Q tip and alcohol flashes off and leaves a perfect thin film of rosin. Wipes up with a patch and alcohol.
Trying to get powdered rosin to stick where you want it withput making a huge mess is like trying to herd cats or pushing a rope.

Joe, Randy Robinett and I tried to shame Humble Henry into a Bison ride but he wised up after trying to pet a horse!!!! -Al

I used lead "sheet" for the first time a cpl weeks ago. Worked fine. Usually make better fitting inserts and use drywall tape....

But there was a roll of the sheet lead and always wanted to try it. It does allow you a lot more latitude on insert dimensions.

Split copper water pipe. Annealed, one on top one on the bottom. If it turns from not being tight enough, will leave copper on barrel, but oil and steel wool gets it right off. Never a mark, or scratch.
