I make 2" long collets of 1.5" Aluminum alloy round stock. Some collets get an inside taper.
I saw slits from both ends.
Grade 5 bolts in 1/2-13 were snapping off.
I switched to 7/8-14 and now have no problems.
It took 560 foot pounds of torque to get a Mosin barrel off. That was with 200 ft pounds of torque on the nuts. I had to use cornstarch to increase the coefficient of friction.
