Rem/Age Barrel Swap 1 : thejimmster 0 **Need Help**

My first attempt at removing the barrel from my Rem 700 was not successful.

Tools:
Davidson Barrel Vice
Wheeler Action Wrench
Rubber Mallet

Tried using a piece of leather to "cushion" the barrel inside the vice. When trying to unscrew the action from barrel, the barrel kept rotating/slipping in the vice even after a lot of torque on barrel vice nuts.

Next attempt was using painters tap on barrel to keep in from slipping. No luck. Lots of torque too. Barrel is getting getting marred and I'm not concerned about that.

Will rosin help?

Looking to even score on this project and successfully remove the factory Rem 700 barrel.

I finally found a pic of the vise. No wonder it won't work for you, looks to be a 'hobby' tool. Removing factory barrels takes more. A vise made of steel, that'll except bushings made of steel or aluminum, that are machined to the contour of the barrel, is what is needed.

If you don't care about the barrel makes it simple. Use the action wrench on the action and a pipe wrench on the barrel. Put them close together when you do it. Ben there done that. :o ;D :-X :)

Sorry if my previous posts sound harsh, but it takes some serious tools to remove factory barrels. That tool just isn't "serious" enough. It'd work on custom barrel removal, if not torqued too tight, and custom installation.

Take it to a machine shop or gunsmith and have them take a cut in front of recoil lug with a parting tool (as close to recoil lug as possible). they don't need to go super deep, just enough to relieve the stress on the threads. They can chuck on on the barrel and let the action hang out.

If you try too hard to remove it using an action wrench, you risk damaging the action.
