Removing a Manners Mini Chassis

The contact marks on it are pretty telling. ;)
That's not the one I'm working on. I'm not sure how it ended up in my shop, but somebody clearly removed it from a stock. I'm just not sure how.

My current plan is to rig up some blocks across the top of the stock and drop all thread through the action screw holes so I can pull up on it, then start heating. I'm really don't see this as being any different than bedding an action, but I'll keep this updated no matter how it turns out.

Epoxy doesn't take much heat to start loosening.

Which has always made me wonder about those scorching hot summer matches where the stock is too hot to touch...
A buddy of mine had one come loose. He was having issues with a barrel I had done for him. If you applied force to the muzzle end, you could feel a creaking/clunking noise coming from the action area. It went back to Manners. They fixed it and all the problems went away.

Hmmm. Made it seem like it was yours earlier. Did you see the stock that it came out of?

Talked to my buddy at Manners and he said you could possibly get it out but getting it back in will not be easy and much easier for them with their fixtures to properly set it in the stock. Seeing as yours isn't messed with yet you still have time to send it back. Said it takes a day or two to fix.

Lol. I'm a manners fan, but that ain't coming back in a day or two. Have you ever walked through the back of that place? It takes at least that long to get somebody on the phone.

So now that we've determined that they can be removed, which part of putting it back in is any harder than bedding an action?

Yup I have. Didn't say it was coming back in a day or two but fixed in that time which should tell you something. Might take a little longer to get through the shop work schedule of course but it will come back fixed properly.

No idea as I have never thought about tearing one apart but in a bed job you are just adding a little material and not resetting a large part of the stock into a perfect place so it works as you want. That is why they have fixtures set up for that job.

Dumb question... have you taken a full assessment of the problem? Are you sure the chassis is crooked, and it's not just a barrel shaped like a banana?

I have 2 different twist barrels for this rifle and both ran pretty straight in the lathe. Plus I just switched to a lightened action over the summer. Out of the 4 total possible combinations, everything hugs the left side.

I didn’t realize it was such a substantial piece of aluminum. If the stock finish is important I would definitely protect the sides with a heat shield or at least wet cloth clamped in place and use a propane torch and small flame for heat. Aluminum transfers heat rather well and simply heating the middle will quickly have the whole thing plenty hot. Once you get hot enough for a few drops of water to boil I predict it will pull out rather easily.
