Remove brake to clean barrel?

Carbon is hygroscopic and acidic when exposed to moisture,humidity.. It should be removed periodically. That said, the actual crown is self cleaning. Not only that, but if you use a brush, it'll get it. Crud gets blown away with every shot. I've never seen a crown with any buildup, but I've seen it close to .100 thou deep on the muzzle and it was pretty badly pitted underneath.

Not removing the brake invites nicking the crown by the junction of the jag (or brush) and cleaning rod. Brake or no brake, I always make sure the rod/jag junction never exits the muzzle by placing my finger over the bore to feel where the tip of jag (or brush) is at. You can't do that with the brake on. It's a good thing to remove the brake when cleaning.

I will always remove my brake because it gets full of copper plasma/vapor from the bullet jacket.

(I learned that, on this site, yesterday)

I saw that too.................

Now to derail the OP`s thread........Sorry about this.......

I have a Harrells radial brake, what is the BEST method to remove one??????

Phil.

When they get bad enough I just bead blast lightly. If the blasting hurts them harrells has the replacement cheap. To me brakes are disposables. I always use titanium or stainless for my stuff.

Jon,

Where do you get the Titanium????

Phil.

My brakes all come off EVERY time I clean. I have a small asprin bottle filled with Butches Bore Shine. I put the brake in the bottle and give a vigorous shake every once in a while while I clean the bore. The Butches in the bottle turns NASTY BLUE in no time. The only thing I can think of that turns cleaning solution blue is COPPER. I dump and refill the bottle often.....maybe after 8 to 10 brakes. I simply spray the brake with break cleaner (no pun intended) to rinse it off before I reinstall it.
